What to do when living in Hartford on a snowy Saturday.
1) Get in the car
2) Drive to BruRm @ BAR in New Haven
3) Consume many great beers brewed on the premises
4) Eat lots of excellent pizza (sorry Pepe's... you may have met your match - these pies can't be beat!)
5) Decide to get another couple of pizzas for tomorrow
6) Kill some time until you're legal to drive back to Hartford
Yep, that was our regular routine for three years. I still miss those pizzas and their outstanding beer.

This is a great SMALL space to see awesome bands. Although I will agree with the other poster about Cafe Nine that the ginormous post in front of the stage has to go, this is a great place to see lots of genres. They have blues jams, rockabilly, punk, etc, usually a low admission price, and cheap drinks. Cafe Nine usually fills up late, so if you get there before 10 you can grab a table. It is a really small space though, so if you don't like being crowded this aint the place for you.

The Children's Museum is a perfect place to bring young ones or even to go when you are bored.
All the rooms have a specific theme and they are changed periodically. The experience is terrific as you always walk away from it with knowledge of a particular subject that you never had before. It's not specifically catered to a specific subject (for example, science or nature) but you'll always have something to talk about.
Parking is located nearby and is close to a lot of restaurants for a complete afternoon.

Sunday morning movies & mimosa - $4 classic movie and $2 mimosas! This is a beatiful theater, showing first run movies too. They have Sunday morning classic movies at 11:00, which are $5 or $4 if you sign up for the free criterion club card. They also show 11:30 pm cult classics on I believe Thursday & Friday, too late for me! It is easy to get to from 95, on Temple Street in New Haven. They validate parking if you don't want to park on the street, there is a garage across the street. You really can't beat the Sunday morning classic movies though, it's a great bargain and the seats fill up by 11:00, so get there ahead of time.

Cutlers is a nice alternative to the music superstores. For their size, they have a great selection of CDs. It's not all pop and top 20 -- they have a good array of alternative as well. The store and the staff are very laid back -- but knowlegable if you ask them. It's centrally located in New Haven -- very near Yale University -- so there are always college kids in there. They've been around forever -- so locals shop there too. Prices are competative and fair.

More
Every Friday night (weather permitting) July through August, a classic family friendly movie will be shown on the New Haven Green. This is an occasion for many folks to spread out their picnic blankets for an evening of fun that's more exciting than staying in and renting a movie.
Showings start sometime after 8pm, whenever it's deemed dark enough, but I recommend arriving earlier so you can stake your claim to some prime blanket real estate.
If you're more interested in hanging out and chatting through the movie, no one will be offended if you stick to the back - most folks are very friendly at these types of events. Just remember to be courteous!
Note: If you are of legal age and don't become rowdy, no one will bother you if you bring beer and/or wine. Just please remember to clean up after yourself!
Don't feel like packing a picnic? Grab take out from one of the great restaurants nearby.
For 2005:
July 8 - West Side Story
July 15 - North by Northwest
July 22 - the Proud Family Movie
July 29 - Singin' in the Rain
August 5 - a collection of short animated films
August 12 - Casablanca
August 19 - The Wizard of Oz

Harry is one of the best DJ's I have seen out there! I was in a wedding recently that he worked, and it was amazing! He prepped the wedding party as to how he would introduce us, kept us comfortable while we waited, and threw in some great jokes to keep the mood uplifted. Once we had the formalities out of the way (like dinner), he had the dance floor packed the entire night! I never once heard a song that made me groan and wish I could change the channel. He handed out glow sticks and had a bubble machine that somehow did not seem out of place at a wedding. Many girls I know have recommended him, and now I know why. He was very professional, but not stuffy. He really does a great job.

More
NMS is a local music school, catering to all ages and abilities for a variety of instruments, vocal styles, and dance forms. Starting with music-focused playgroups for toddlers, then branching out to individual and/or group lessons for children, teenagers and adults, and offering some supervised ensembles for advanced students, NMS is a "one stop shopping" for your music education needs.
They're not your cheapest bet in the New Haven area, but they're probably your best. Their teachers are selected not just for their own musical accomplishments, but also for their abilities as educators. Your experiences will be professional and pleasant with NMS teachers.
You can take classes in New Haven, or at branches in Guilford or Woodbridge.
You're never too late to learn to play/sing/dance! (or, if you're already a musician, it's never too late to get better!)

The Peabody Museum is a great place to take the kids. We go at least once a year. The Milford Public Library has a free pass you can borrow for a few days. The Peabody has a wonderful dinousaur room that the kids absolutely love. We went one time and they were having a scavenger hunt in the dinosaur room where you had to search for dinasour facts, and the kids got a prize at the end. This museun is just the right size too, not to large yet not to small.
