For a long time, York Square Cinemas was the only option to see a film in downtown New Haven. Thankfully, the management did not let this fact get in the way of selecting interesting, non-mainstream films that greatly enriched the arts scene around the Yale campus.
Unfortunately, the venue itself needed a makeover. The seats tended towards being uncomfortable, and the screens were rather small.

Yale Repertory Theatre has a wide array of theatre that is performed. They average from student shows to professional shows by famous author/writers.
The theatre is a decent size and the tickets are relatively cheap for a theatre in New Haven. Parking can be a problem (as any place in the downtown area) so plan on getting there early to scour the streets for on-site parking.
Shows typically start at 8:00pm, but check the listings as some venues offer different show times.

Yale has so much to offer for everyone. The campus is beautiful, and on a warm spring day you can't help but fall in love with the place. New Haven itself gets a bad rap, but as far as small cities go, it has a great selection of restaurants, bars and cultural activities. It's common sense not to walk on scary dark streets late at night, so as long as you follow that advice, you should do just fine in New Haven.
With the residential college system for the undergraduates, students get the best of both worlds - a great research institution, and the personal attention of a small college.
For God for country and for Yale!

My favorite gallery in New Haven, the British Art Center is an exceptionally well curated museum. Its permanent collection is impressive, it brings in some excellent traveling shows, and has a great educational program to supplement your experience - great docents (frequently Yale students), occasional film screenings or musical performances, and other innovations.
If you live in New Haven, don't overlook the BAC gift shop during the winter holiday season - they've usually got the most creative/unusual/attractive holiday cards in town, at reasonable prices.
During the summer, remember - it's air conditioned.

The Yale Cabaret is part of the well-known Yale Drama School. It is located in the basement of one of the Yale Buildings. They do a wide variety of productions -- from musicals to new plays. Most of the actors come from the School of Drama -- so the acting is usually top quality. It is more of a dinner theatre with tables and chairs as opposed to traditional seating. Drinks and food are reasonably priced and good. The downside is that it can be crowded and sometimes warm -- but if you're looking for something different -- try it. They do quite a few production throughout the year and admission is very reasonably priced.

As I'm starting to explore my new territories in Westville, Wunderlee Art gallery stands out, the last storefront on the left heading west through the small town center. Unlike the other galleries in town, the "art" in its windows is fairly unimaginative at best, and often unattractive. There's no reason that art should feel a need to match your furniture, but there's also no reason it should remind you of your high school attempts at oil painting either.

The Wave Gallery is one of my favorite gift shops in all of the many cities I've ever lived in. They have a wonderful selection -- you can find something appropriate for pretty much anyone. They have cards, candles, jewelry, knick-knacks, art and tons of "cutsie items." Prices are reasonable -- depending on what you buy. They do have a nice selection of items in many price ranges. Their merchandise is unique and fun -- not what you would find in a traditional chain card or gift shop. I love to shop here -- and I see something new each time! Highly recommend.

Toad's place is a nice venue. Although it is on the smaller side it's a very personal setting when you do get to see a band play. Thats what makes it so great. Also, the long history it has. I would definitely recommend going there if you could get tickets. You won't be disappointed.
