I am new to trying river front restaurants in Newburgh. Don't try this one! Food was okay but service was AWFUL! I still regret not saying anything to manager about our experience. Paid a lot of money to not have a good time. First order bottle of wine which 10 minutes after ordering find out they don't have so order a second bottle. Wait another 10 minutes (meanwhile waitress has still not taken our food order) to finally get our wine which the waitress explains took so long because they did not have that one either and rather than tell us she sent someone out to buy it. So twenty minutes later order our dinner which then took over a half hour to come out. Waitress never says anything to us. I tried to get a second glass of water out of the wait help only to be extremely embarrassed because everyone but the wait help heard me say excuse me three times. The waitress also heard me and said she'd bring me a glass which arrived about 5 minutes later. Could have choked on the bread which was sustaining us by then. BOTTOM LINE - not worth it!
Pros: It's waterfront
Cons: Lousy service

Dont base this wonderful restuarant on its drinks alone. Like someone said below, its not a bar. Just a note, I have never had a problem with the drinks. The food is very tasty and the atmosphere is inviting especially in the summer when you can sit on the patio with a nice coctail and good company. The staff is always personable and willing to help or explain any questions I may have. I go to this restuarant often and enjoy it everytime. You must visit The River Grill if you are on the Newburgh waterfront either for Brunch, Lunch or Dinner! In addition, I have held several Bridal/ Baby Showers here and everyone raved about the food and friendly service.

I just moved here from Long Island and look forward to eating out on the River. I had a few problems with the River Grill to start. All of those problems have been alleviated. It is amazing. I eat out frequently and the last 4 times I have been to the Grill have been absolutely amazing. Service is above par. Food is inspiring. A bit pretentious but that's to be expected. Price is very reasonable for what you get. Definately recommend!
Pros: atmosphere, food, service, prices
Cons: its a little over the top snooty

The River Grill is one of the Newburgh waterfront restaurants that has been a consistent favorite of mine since this strip of riverfront restaurants first opened several years back. A more classy, grownup feel than some of the other establishments (all excellent in their own right, but more "meet markets"), the River Grill is everything you want in a special occasion restaurant for a birthday or anniversary: you have ambience both inside and on the back porch overlooking the river, you have a high quality of food, and you have like-minded clientele out for a special evening.
On our last visit, I had the filet mignon, while guests had the Southwestern ravioli, and a chicken dish. Each entree ran roughly $25, plus we had a coupon that saved us $25 on our total bill.
Was it worth it? Yes. But honestly, I come here mostly when I have a coupon or gift certificate, because the prices are on the high side. I don't mind paying for high quality, and the service here makes the prices somewhat understandable, but I do wish that dishes were just a few dollars cheaper and I didn't always have to go the coupon route.
But I'll be back, no doubt.

Came for dad's b/day. 1st the good: great view of the river, nice sitting outdoors tho it did get a bit chilly (it is fall I know). good seating for groups. the calamar, oysters, steamed clams & salads were very good. kids menu good value at $7 (tho don't order the pasta - tiny cheap portions & no f.f. or drink included tho menu didn't state this). appetizers came out quick. the duck l'orange & chicken salad were very good.
but the bad: the drinks took forever & the entrees took 70min! we were not happy campers with 4 kids in tow. nice specials but the lobster ravioli in wine sauce looked good was terrible tasting (& the server failed to tell us it had wine & still recommended it to our 12 yr.old!), the lamb entree (btw I love lamb) came with demiglace port wine sauce also terrible tasting. dad had the filet mignon asked for med.rare came out med.well.
SUMIT: overrated prior review but do agree the view & outdoor patio seating is very nice. not worth driving all the way from the city for dinner while visiting inlaws.
Pros: view & outdoor seating, appetizers, live music next door
Cons: not tasty sauces in entrees, long wait for entrees

Unbelievable - don't give an eatery bad marks just based on their drinks, it's not a pure bar. For our visit, the food was excellent. My chilean sea bass prepared to perfection, the new zealand 8rack of lamb tender & fresh (was not gamey at all). the drinks tho were quite potent - only had 1, had to have a substitute driver! yes not top shelf liquor but hey came to eat good food... The svc was also by far the best we have experienced, so refreshing & we are from the city! The view of the hudson is breathtaking - we are envious for those who live in the hi-priced units here! We saw so many sea-faring it was a wonderful sight! So don't visit here for the cosmos to drink, visit for the cosmos to gaze at nite!!
Pros: view, svc, chilean & new zealand dishes
Cons: drinks too strong, we don't live here!

My friends, the view, the atmosphere (except for the loud bar next door) and the wine were wonderful. The appys were decent, but the chicken and linguine was fair at best. Portions were huge. Plenty to take home, and share. The evening was fun, but order a bottle of wine. I spent 8.00 on a cosmopolitan made with cheap bar vodka, and was the absolute (pardon the pun) worst I have ever tasted in my life. It was also one of the smallest I have ever been served. I've had better, and larger $6.00 cosmos (made with absolut, or $7.00 for grey goose) in other places.
Pros: beautiful views, good wait staff
Cons: parking
