On Thursday 7/7/05 I forgot to bring my lunch to work. I am a teacher and I am working as a summer school teacher at Thurgood Marshall Elem. in Newark, DE
A fellow teacher reccommended going to Mike's to order subs for lunch. I picked them up and the sandwiches were huge. I ordered an italian sub and she ordered a cheesesteak. When I entered the store that shop was so busy and the phone was ringing off the hook.
The sandwiches were loaded with meat , lettuce, and tomatoes. We could not eat all of our sandwich because we were so full.
I reccommend Mike's because of the tasty food, quick service, and the food is value priced.

For all of you who live in the Newark/WIlmington area, the University of DE is a great place to take your children for ongoing cultural activites that many times are free to the public. The University is a good place to take your children when they are bored and have nothing to do.
For example, there was a famous artist Paul Jones that donated his art collection to the school this past spring through the summer months. I took my child to see the exhibit to learn about the collection and learn about a famous artist she was unfamiliar with and it was all free. The University also offers lecture series if you wish to do more in depth study for adults, music and movie programs to the public.

Here is a resource for residents of New Castle County if you are loking for a job. Pencador Corporate Commons is located off route 896 a few miles from Glasgow High School.
Go in and register or register online to see a list of jobs in the New Castle area . There is assistance in the office for any job related issues or help with constructing a resume. Parents can also obtain working papers for their children.
I have used this service online to apply for positions in the past. This is a good resource because all jobs are not always posted in the local paper here.

Brew Haha is a nice, clean locally owned coffee shop. The people are always friendly behind the counter. There are always drink specials/creations that are listed on the board inside or on the stand outside. The coffee is consistently good and there are places to sit and hang out if you want to. The muffins I've had there are ok, not the best but not bad either.

Iron Hill Brewery and Restaurant in Newark both benefits and suffers from its prime location in a college town. On the plus side, Iron Hill gets a fairly regular college crowd and their restaurant is almost always full. Sadly though, many of the finer aspects of a brew pub are lost on the beer guzzling crowd, so the restaurant feels a little out of place. Still, the food is generally pretty tasty albeit expensive for being standard upscale microbrew fare. I suggest ordering heavy appetizers and sampling their beer but going elsewhere for dinner. A note of caution: parking here is pretty much only street and metered.

Klondike Kate's is a haven for college students who don't mind paying an arm and a leg for bad service. Granted, their half-priced nacho night is worth dealing with bad service, but their menu isn't anything spectacular. Unless you know someone who works there, expect to wait a long time to be seated. I waited for over 45 minutes, then walked across the street, got put on Iron Hill's waiting list, and was seated at IH in 5 minutes. I hear they have dancing on the weekends, but if the crowd is anything like those who work there, count me out.

Elegant nails is a good inexpensive place to get a manicure or pedicure. They do also offer waxing. You can just walk in, it seems like that is what most of their customers do. An appointment would make it quicker though. They have the chairs that massage while you get your pedicure done. I belive they use mostly OPI products and the results last quite a while.

We have taken our pets to New London Veterinary Center for years and have always had a good experience with them. We have had to put 2 pets to sleep in those years and they are very respectful and caring during that difficult time. The staff is friendly and courteous. The wait time is not very long. They also offer boarding services.
