Rainbow Books and Music is your typical college town used books/music store. While I always enjoyed browsing the selections, I never actually made any purchases. Considering they're selling used items, I found the prices to be a little too high (especially the books). Used DVDs were downright expensive and comparable to prices of new versions. The employees were friendly, but I always got the feeling that they were watching to see if I would steal something.

Rainbow is a used book and CD store. They buy stuff from you then re sell it. I took them 20 cd's once and they offered me 50 cents each, $10 for 20 cd's. I said forget it. Then before I left another guy that worked there said ok I'll give you $15 cash or $20 store credit, I said ok sure. Later that day a girl that worked there told me one of the CD's was worth at least $25 because it was a Japan import and they were calling me a sucker after I left. Once I sold them a book for $1 and it turned out I had left my drivers license in it and the guy that worked there said I could have it back for quote "twenty bucks". I went to the Newark police and then he just gave it back and said he was only joking. Do not trust this store.

Rainbow Books & Music has been a mainstay in the heart of downtown Newark for many, many years. It is the place in town to find those off-beat cds from local and little-known artists. The employees over the years are always incredibly knowledgeable of their music supply, and always happy to offer suggestions when looking for nothing in particular. The only downfall of Rainbow is that it's located at the end of Main Street, which often provides for a parking challenge.

This place replenishes its stock DAILY, so there are always new books coming into the store. If you want to book-hunt for hours, this is the place. You'll get dirty, and it's hot in the summer, but you can easily walk in with a 20 dollar bill and walk out with a stack of interesting reading. This place is an INSTITUTION, one of the last of a dying breed, and if you are a book lover, it behooves you to get to this place and enjoy rummaging through the stacks and shelves of this bibliophile's paradise.
