Let's start with the good - service was attentive and the steaks were good. The building is unique and provides an interesting setting for a steakhouse.
Now the bad - service was over the top. Everything was the "best you will ever have" or "a fantastic choice, one of my favorites" or "was everything just exactly perfect and beautiful?" While attentive service is good, the constant boasting of how great the steaks and wine are, how great the building is, and how wonderful it is they have a $480K bottle of wine got old real quick.
Further, the wine prices were at least 50% higher across the board compared to even NY City prices. I would expect a great southern steakhouse to have a bartender who knows how to make one of the great classic cocktails - the Sazerac. What I received was a wiskey on the rocks with a rock sugar swizzle stick to use to stir in the sweetness.
At the end of the day, this is a decent steakhouse that tries to sell iteself at every opportunity. They should let their food and service do their talking and avoid boasting about their greatness so people can enjoy a nice quality steak dinner without feeling like they are attending a time-share sales demo.
Pros: Decent steaks
Cons: Wine prices, bartending, special prices

I had heard the Stock-Yard Restaurant was an awesome steakhouse in Nashville. Let me just tell you, it definitely was not! I called to make a reservation for mine and my husband's six year anniversary. The lady who took my reservations did not ask if we were coming for a special occassion or anything. Our waiter did not ask us this question as well.
The building is very outdated. We walked in, and the smell was overwhelming. It smelled exactly like body odor. We are both 26 years old. We order our drinks from our waiter, and he tells my husband that he is not able to server him. My dog chewed a small piece of my husband's driver's license off, and the waiter said he couldn't server him because of that. I had never heard of that before, but it was fine. We ordered an appetizer. We ordered the crab cakes because they are my favorite. It was $13.25 for two of the smallest crab cakes I have ever seen. We ordered our filets, which were $40 a piece just for the meat. The filets were alright, but I have gotten a filet at Stoney River which was 10 times better than this one. Someone came to pick up our dirty plates from our table, and this guy smelled so bad. Now we know where the body odor smell came from. It was so bad, it made my stomach hurt. Our bill wound up being $160. Our waiter went to charge my husband's credit card, and he brings us back a bill that says $175. He tried to screw us out of $15. I asked him how this happened, and he looked at how much we gave him for a tip and said "Your bill got mixed up with someone else's". Well that is funny to me because you brought us the right bill in the first place.
All in all, I would not recommend going here to anyone. It was a horrible experience. It was not something or somewhere I would want to go for a nice dinner. They also put us in a room with two groups of eight people. They were so loud, and it was obvious me and my husband were trying to have a nice dinner. That definitely didn't happen! Horrible service, horrible experience!
Pros: Pretty good food
Cons: Waiters smell like body odor; Tried to overbill us

Why would you go to a place like Morton's or Ruths Chris when there is a steakhouse like the Stockyard? This is one of the most unique restaurants I've ever been to. Beautiful, elegant atmosphere, mouthwatering food, impeccable serivce and a wine list that would rival any you would come accross in the world. I had their signature blackened Prime Rib that was probablly the best I've ever tasted. You'll spend a few bucks but its worth every penny. Highly recommended!
Pros: Steak/ Service/ Wine/ Atmosphere

Now granted, I'm not an expert on fine dining, but I know good food when it is set before me. We were served some GREAT food. We started out with lamb chops which was not on the menu. It was recommended by our wonderful waitress. It was a nice startoff for the meal to come. When our meal arrived, my wife enjoied the petite filet with russet potatos (Not that good. It was ok at best.) and I enjoied the Prime NY strip which was also not on the menu and the spinach with a glass of wine. The spinach was awesome. I wanted the aged strip but they had "just ran out". Normally I don't have any room left over for dessert at the end of the meal, but I shared some of the chocolate cake with my wife. It was our 2nd anniversary, and sharing seemed like the appropriate thing to do! I tell ya, it was the BEST chocolate cake i've ever eaten. I can't begin to describe it. I wouldn't do it justice.
I really didn't spare any expense on our meal. After all, it was our anniversary. I intended to spend $100 or a little more for our meal. I was sure surprised to see we racked up $160 for our meal. It consisted of lamb chops for appetiser ($16), 7oz filet , potatos, cake, 16oz prime strip ($60), cream of spinach, and a glass of jester cabernet wine.
To sum it up.... I would recomment this restaruant to anyone who has never been to the Stockyard, but I would also recommend that unless they wanted to spend $100 on a meal, they should only choose the food that is on the menu

Hands down, this is the only steakhouse that I would bring my clients to. The atmosphere, history, service and the food are top notch. I can't imagine bringing anyone to a run-of-the-mill chain like Mortons or the Palm when this one-of-a-kind treasure is here. The wine list is Unbleiveable!!!
Pros: The best steak and lobster
Cons: Not Downtown

The only reason it is highly reguarded is because of the historic setting. It is at the site of the old nashville stockyard where cattle were bought and sold. There are many different dining rooms that are all unique in their own way but that's about it. It has a rough location and the food is simply not very good. Very, very overpriced for the quality. I went once and I will not return, service was not very good...pretty much matched the food. If your gonna spend the money go to the other side of town and check out Ruth's Chris.
Pros: Unique setting, serves very large parties
Cons: Very overpriced and not very good

Steak was mediocre at best. So overpriced. Sides were small (not enough to share) and luke warm. Martini was $14 and served in a glass that was chipped around half of the lip.
Basically, this is by far the worst nice steakhouse in this city. Mortons, Flemings, Ruths' Chris, Jimmy Kelly's, Sperry's, The Palm.
Even Outback Steakhouse might be better than this place.
Don't go!
Pros: Open for Dinner?
Cons: Overpriced, Bad Location, Bad Service, Bad Food

A few weeks ago my husband and I dined at the Stock-Yard. We are Nashville natives and had heard conflicting reviews about the restaurant in its present day state. We decided to make our own opinions and made a reservation for early evening. Upon arrival our server, a young woman, was very friendly. She asked us for a drink order and we said we needed to look at the wine list (they have one of the most extensive and amazing). After careful consideration we ordered a moderately priced Cabernet Sauvignon. Our server then briefly yet eloquently told us about the specials, prices included, and went to get our wine. For the meal my husband and I started with the escargot. It was very tender and had lot's of flavor and garlic. We then followed our servers suggestion and tried the Baby Mixed Salad. For our entree I ordered a 7oz. Filet with Oscar topping and my husband tried the special, a Kansas Strip with house seasoning. We decided to split two sides, a loaded potato and the cream of spinach. Overall the food was decent, but nothing to write home about. I believe the restaurant has good intentions, but their culinary staff is not up to par with their wait staff and wine list. With a new head chef and more innovative ideas ( more organic, vegetarian, heart healthy, lighter options) I think the Stock-Yard would truly live up to its top Steak House status. I recommend this restaurant if you have some money and want to enjoy a 5 course meal with excellent service and food that is on its way to becoming spectacular.
Pros: Excellent service; free parking; free shuttle service
Cons: Higher prices
