Returning to the Bay Area this winter to see friends and family, the first place I visited for a meal was Garden Fresh. Over the last few years, it's been a really nice treat for my wife and I, but since the restaurant went under new management late this year, the food has reached new heights. While the ambiance falls short on every scale, the food is what I consider the best vegetarian in the bay area. If you're into "fake meats", this place does wonders. Some of my favorites include the Vegetarian Pork Chop and General Tso's Chicken. Served with a complimentary corn chowder soup and brown rice, it's quite tasty and filling. I consider this one of the bay area's secret gems, and urge anyone who is into good food and willing to share in a vegetarian meal to visit this place. Note, if you're not into fake meats, I don't really recommend this place, as its speciality is this. Enjoy!

My whole family goes there because that lady named cherlete explains what we need in a way we can understand and we are learning from her asnd her doctor named joe. She is super sweet and is always so nice to us. Dr. joe is so nice also. She treats us with respect and nobody ever made us so welcome as she did. Ask for her and she will help you. And dr jo won't hurt you and she will offer you something to drink also.

Each time we visit california, we have to go to this place. This is true, authentic sushi similar to what you can find in Japan. Fish variety is amazing and nigiri are to die for. Amazing freshness, balance and taste. They also have great appetizers like fish liver in ponzu and fried tofu. The restaurant is always packed but the sushi is definitely worth the wait!

This lovely restaurant in Mountain View has the best Cuban food and I can't recommend it enough.
We went there Saturday night and after ordering their incredible sample tapas plate, we all had salads and split one or two more small dishes and were stuffed!
The live music starts around 9 pm and we stayed, listened, and danced a while - it was so enjoyable.

The independent book store is a rare find and Mountain View is lucky to have this gem downtown. Books Inc carries a nice selection of books in store and will happily special order anything that they don't usually carry. The employees are friendly and knowledgeable and will go out of their way to help you find something. There is also a small cafe upstairs that serves coffee and baked treats.

This store is attached to the Russian Club where Russians of the area come to catch up on the most recent movies, CDs and books from their native country. Samovar is also a Russian delight. The word Samovar is actually a tea kettle that was used years ago. Here they sell Russian balogna (which tastes nothing like American Balogna), cakes, pastries, breads, chocolate, and other yummy Russian goods. My family and I love coming here because you can buy stuff here that you just don't see in Safeway.

Don Giovanni is a family favorite. Great for going in groups, as it can get quite noisy, it serves large portions of high-quality fare. Dishes aren't too adventuresome, but they are well done. Especially recommend the calamari and minestrone (both EXCELLENT) as starters. All in all, don't be afraid of going classic, Ristorante Don Giovanni is sure to elegantly please. Plus, gotta love Castro Street in Mountain View.
Pros: good dependable food, service, fun atmosphere
Cons: none

More
We went there for lunch. We are big foodies and especially love gourmet seafood recipes. This place does it right. The tartar appetizer with salmon and hamachi was dreamy -- seriously! I will be dreaming about that one and coming back for it. My husband had the Petrale Sole -- healthy portion size, beautiful buerre blanc. I also had the Chicken Teriyaki Wrap (don't know why) and it was pretty tasty, but I wouldn't order that again. I should have tried something else. Most of the tables around us were ordering burgers -- they must be good there. And, the place was packed. What's interesting about the wine list: they have half bottles! I wish more places would do that. The half-bottle was made for restaurants. However, the red wine list is quite poor. We had to order a white while we'd normally order a red. We'll bring our own next time. The service was friendly, but a bit slow. Took us 15mins to get our bottle of wine. But, we'll forgive that as they were very busy. Oh, and another note: The waiter (Carlos) was really sweet, but he immediately reviewed the tip of each bill he picked up and would banter with the other waiters about it. The table next to us obviously left a small tip and he appeared to be ripping on them from the servers station --pointing them out to other waiters. We left a nice tip and he made a point to come up to us as we left and thank us. That's so cheesy. Waiters should really be more professional about the whole gratuity thing. Such a turn off. But, I'm ranting... that was a small issue in comparison to how great the food was. We look forward to coming back and trying some other items.
Pros: Great food! Does seafood right! Adequate portions!
Cons: Service is questionable, but we will try them again
