I've had my fair share of sushi in LA, and I must say 'blue fish' is the best. the service, the sushi chefs, the quality of the food, and the prices are all exemplary. the location could not be better, as it's set in quiet Montrose. You can enjoy your meal and take a long stroll alone Honolulu blvd. and check out the shops and other restaurants.
Pros: food quality, great sushi chefs, service, price, parking
Cons: max. occupancy of probably no more than 40, small restaurant

The Black Cow cafe is a great little restaurant in Montrose. Items are inespensive, but SO tasty. They're not just a restaurant, though. They offer a wonderful coffee/tea/malt/etc bar.
When my husband and I were about to be married, we took his parents (who were visiting from out of town) to have lunch there. I ordered this tuna melt sandwhich that was totally to die for. They have a chicken penne pasta that is great, too. With sun-dried tomatoes. MMM. My in-laws were so impressed with the meal, they gave a HUGE tip. LOL And eight years later, they can't stop talking about it. I don't live in California anymore, so I really do miss this place. I wish they'd consider starting a chain. Or at least try opening a few here and there, perhaps on the east coast.
It's a cozy restaurant, and one of the best in town. I would recommend it to anybody!

Al's Deli is great. I go there about every couple of days. The family is friendly, Al (not his real name) makes a sandwich-of-the-day every day for a good price. I always go with that. They stock alot of stuff for a variety of ethnic cooking ideas, and they make and stock a wide variety of items displayed in refridgerated windows and on shelves. You can eat in (about 5 tables) or you can take out. It's a nice peaceful, friendly atmosphere, and the prices are great. I got a couple of sandwiches one day, and the other fellow I was eating with looked up and said, "there's nothing like eating a professional sandwich."
Pros: Good Food, good price, friendly operators, great experience all around
Cons: Not a restaurant. You order from the register and sit. I usually buy to go, but seating is available

I stopped by this place, recommended by a friend, what a great experience! food is great, authentic Italian! however, I had a piece of Mediterranean dish combo, wow! I recommend to whom ever wants to impress on the choice with your friends.

Out of all the bars on Honolulu Ave. Avignone's is my fave. It's your typical hole in the wall bar but it's a great place to catch up with friends. The music isn't too loud, it's never too crowded and the drinks are strong. The regulars are friendly and the red leather booths just add to the ambiance. Plus this place has a great music selection on their jukebox. Perfect place to relax with a cocktail.

Star Cafe maintains their hometown feel. They have some great food, yet such a great atmosphere. Their rolls (the ones that come out before the meal) are amazing. Try their lasagna, it's to die for! It's very convenient and has some great prices as well. Their staff is very friendly making this one of my favorites.
