I have gone to the Fish Hopper many times over the years. I just recently took my family on 05/10/08. The prices have gone way up, and the food is not like it use to be. Plates here average 20-40 dollars, which I am more then willing to pay; however, not for something that taste like something that came from Sizzlers. Fish Hopper definately has the best Clam Chowder, but that is the extent. This place always has a waiting time of over an hour. They have a reputation of sqeezing as many people in as possible; so you may be stuck with a corner or a small table that only fits 4 when your a party of 6. The service is nothing great. If you are planning on paying out the pocket for a romantic dinner this is not the place for you- try The Chart House. I have

Being stuck in a tourist locale like Cannery Row is a lot like being on a ski montain with only the overpriced burgers in the snack bar for sustenance. The Fish Hopper is one of those places that lures you in with glitz and location and full page ads in the local dining guides- and then nails you with prices to pay for it all. Overpriced, overhyped, and a poor value. Our waitress seemed intent on getting us to order the even more audaciously-priced specials. Pass.
Pros: Ocean view, variety
Cons: Price and value

By day, this place is a lovely place to view the ocean and its wildlife and dine seaside, right on the Bay. By night, this place is a cozy retreat where you can enjoy a romantic dinner by their indoor fireplace and look out onto the shore and the waves crashing below lit up by lights. They have really great clam chowder and are very accommodating if you have children dining with you. The restaurant can be a little dark in the evening (primarily so the view outside isn??t spoiled and so you can enjoy the fireplace) if you are looking for the pacifier your child has dropped (never did find it!), but the atmosphere is lovely. This is a lovely locally owned place to dine on fresh seafood. Their calamari appetizer is delicious. The restaurant is located right on Cannery Row.

My husband and I ate at this restaurant on our way through monterey. It looked promising, as the views were amazing and the restaurant was directly on the water. However, the food was far less than impressive. We ordered the clam chowder (the high point of the meal) and it was good. My husband ordered the Mahi Mahi in lemon butter sauce, he said it had no flavor what so ever. I had the Hoppers combo, which was a variety of fried calamari, fish, and shrimp. The calamari and shrimp were completely flavorless. The one very small piece of fish tasted as if it was not only beer battered but like it had been soaking in beer for a week.
The service had good intentions but servers did not speak much english so asking them about the menu proved to be quite a challenge. I would not waste my time at this establishment again unless it was for drinks while overlooking the water.
Pros: view
Cons: flavorless food, non english speaking wait staff, too pricey for the experience

What pulled me in was the great lunch display of the specials in the front. The fish looked fresh and the plates were attractively prepared. My boyfriend and I were seated with a great view of the bay and our server was attentive and stopped by serveral times to make sure everything was ok.
The food was delicious - I suggest the seafood selection (why go to Monterey Bay and get a turkey sandwich?). The drinks are quite spectacular and very original. They tend to go heavy on the alcohol and several drinks are so large they recommend a 2-person minimum.
It is definately pricey - our seafood lunch for two with one drink each and a plate of appetizers rans us $92.00. Dishes ran from $10 and up, most of them in the $15-$20 range.
The waiters could use some ettiquette training. The walk to the bathroom is narrow and I felt as if I was in the way of the servers and was expected to move out of their way. We sat at the bar while we waited for our table and placed our orders for drinks, but the bartender never came back.
Pros: Great view, great food
Cons: Pricey

This restaurant has two things going for it; really good food with a great view of Monterey Bay. I think every table in the restaurant has a great view of the Bay. The food is a bit overpriced but you're paying for a fabulous view while you dine. Everything we ate was delicious and the waiter was nice, even if he wasn't around a lot.
Pros: Good Food, Great View, Nice Service
Cons: Bit Pricey
