My wife and I went to the Sardine Factory on a Tuesday night for a romantic dinner. It was recommended very highly at the Winery in Cannery Row by both the staff and the patrons. An extra perk was that they would have no corkage fee for any wine purchased at the winery, and we had purchased a nice bottle for the occasion.
The restaurant is beautiful, with multiple rooms each having their on charm. We ate in the Conservatory, a beautiful glass-domed room adorned with plants. We were dressed up and ready to enjoy a fine meal. All was going superbly, although we thought it odd that our host told us "welcome home" four separate times. Then, the sommelier swooped over, saw that we had brought our own wine, sniveled "Oh -- I see we have already made our choice," hastily opened the wine and unceremoniously left. That set the tone for the evening -- the staff acted like they were doing us a favor by serving us; quite a departure from the charming and sincere service at nearby Passionfish the previous night.
The meal was fine -- the abalone chowder was wonderful, my wife's mustard-glazed salmon was wonderful, and my scallops over lobster risotto was delicious. I don't think the food warranted the price ($9.50 for a cup of the chowder), and I wonder how it is that restaurant staff think it's good for their establishment to treat the patrons as if they don't belong. But there you have it -- I won't return there. It's too easy to get good meals at better prices and with better service.
Pros: Beautiful rooms, excellent food
Cons: Haughty staff.

I am a frequent visitor to Monterey and have had a pleasurable experience at the Sardine Factory before.
This experience was disappointing in the extreme. The ambience has not changed and is very pleasant,
we dined in the room with the blue and yellow wallpaper and the fireplace blazing. The service, while pleasant, was a bit forced and insincere, and was comprised primarily of young kids with minimal training. We ordered the abalone bisque and seafood delight, which consisted of 3 oysters, 4 mussels, 4 clams, 4 shrimp, and one-half of a very small Maine lobster-all for $35. The price was not the issue, it was the quality of the food itself. Both the shrimp and the lobster had obviously been refrozen and was quite mushy. When we told the staff they were ambiviolent. We cannot recommend this restaurant.
Pros: Ambience, Location
Cons: Poor Quality Food

We had dined here about 4 years ago and after having read some of the recent reviews, were not sure if it was a good as it used to be. Well for us it was still a great place to dine in Montery. The food was fantastic and the service was outstanding. Sure it's a little pricey; particularly if you get a bottle of wine. But I for one don't mind paying a little more for a dining experience.
Pros: Fantastic Dining Experience
Cons: None for us

How the Sardine Factory received a 9.5 I will never know. The restaurant is pricey and overrated. BUT, I can definitely recommend going for TAPAS! Not many people know about this, but you can spend a little less money and have a more casual, relaxed time in the lounge area munching on tapas with friends. I highly recommend the braised kobe shortribs!

There are some really great aspects about the Sardine Factory, but I cannot recommend it. The decor is brilliant. Each room has its own distinct ambience, and all are fantastic. The service is excellent. The hosts and sommelier are especially pleasant. The Sardine Factory provides both a great setting and great service, but the food comes up way short. The prices for both wine and food are extremely high. This could be forgiven if the quality of the food was outstanding. Each course was completely devoid of flavor from the Seafood Indulgence to the Abalone Bisque to the steaks. No flavor whatsoever. The Sardine Factory is a potentially awesome experience if only the food was enjoyable on any level.
Pros: decor, ambience, service
Cons: flavorless food

We dined here about 4 years ago and 4 years prior to that. Now we questioned the thought of returning this year because of the less than average experience we have had. Well, let me tell you what a great surprise not only did we have the best night of our lives but we can't say enough!! We felt like Queens and Kings and everyone we came in contact with was delightful and very professional, like the old days. Please keep up the good work is shows!
Pros: Everything

We have wanted to dine here for years but have not been able. It was worth the wait and I must say we were not dissapointed in any way. The service was perfect the server talked with us as if we were the most special people in the world, his name I think was Vince. The night is one that we will soon not forget. Thank you Sardine Factory.
Pros: Vince, Service, Overall Management
Cons: Didn''t come sooner
