Best

The ambiance is wonderful and the food is exceptional. It may be a little on the pricey side but it's not a white castle so of course you will pay more but the food is worth it.

Not up to par 2/23/2008

My wife and I went about a year ago in the Spring of '07, and like a prior review, the pricing for portion was terribly outrageous, quality of food wasn't noteworthy (in fact, I had a fish entree that didn't settle well with me not long after), and service was very clumsy. I wouldn't call the space chic unless wrought iron and Home Depot unfinished wood is your thing, and clearly the chef seems to be trading more on his CIA creds than the quality of his fare (and the locals know it). In an area with nearly as many pizza places per capita as Brooklyn, it's a pity that Velvet Monkey isn't better since the upscale change would be welcomed. more

The Velvet Monkey 3/18/2006

When The Velvet Monkey opened in Monroe about three years ago, the town was taken by surprise. This very upscale, trendy lookng spot was taking over a space formerly occupied by an Italian deli and right next door to a dry cleaners. But the space was transformed into a chic dining spot that remains popular among local folks and out of towners in search of a great dining experience. There is a fabulous bar in the restaurant and you can relax and enjoy a selection of wine and spirits or while waiting for a table. Try a speciality martini (Ruby Slippers and Marilyn Monroe are just two of my favorites) or a glass of fine wine. When seated, you can browse the nightly list of specials which are thankfully printed on an elegant card on each table. A basket of quality bread is placed on the table with olive oil for dipping. A full menu is also offered and includes a selection of soup, salads, appetizers and entrees of meats, seafood and pasta. We've never had a disappointing meal here and have tasted just about everything on the menu. On our last visit, we enjoyed a sumptuous grilled veal chop (stuffed with apples & gorgonzola cheese) and breast of duck accompanied by haricot verts and roasted potatoes. Dessert was chocolate mousse. It was simply delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed the meal. The restaurant is open for dinner and accepts reservations--strongly recommended on Friday and Saturday evenings. Parking is on the street and not a problem. more
