I don't see how anyone could not like First Avenue. They have the best setup in the cities, the bands are consistently good, and you can even hang out and meet the band after the show, it's good fun. I have not been disappointed by First Avenue yet.

Every production at the Guthrie is the same, or so it seems:
British Accent.
Period Costume.
Middle Aged Audience.
The Guthrie’s mediocrity is probably driven by the last item. The budget is fuelled by season ticket sales, and corsets sell tickets to middle aged people. I have tried the Guthrie again and again, and I’ve been disappointed each and every time. The theater routinely neglects young talent in favor of older, “experienced” actors like the dad from Family Matters.
If you must go, don’t pay full price; get rush tickets. Hang out in the sculpture garden beforehand, and be prepared to leave at intermission.
The Guthrie definitely doesn’t deserve a new building, but it is fitting that the new structure looks like an Ikea with a gigantic blue phallus attached.
If you want inventive, intriguing theater, try the Jeune Lune.

More
The Pantages Theatre is located in Downtown Minneapolis and is part of the Historic Theatre Group. The Pantages offers smaller plays, concerts, ballets, and other shows. Although not used nearly as often as it's sister theatres, the Orpheum and the State, the Pantages is just as beautiful and elegant. It has a smaller house than either of its bigger sisters. It was restored in recent years to its beautiful blue decor. This theatre also has a neat display of theatre history in it's basement, near the theatres only restrooms. It has a lobby with a more modern style bar. The theatre offers main floor and balcony seating. Take the back stairs to catch a glimpse of how badly decayed the theatre was, before they remodled it. They kept up some of the old wall paper for people to see the before and after.

The Theater in the Round has many things going for it. It's got the arena-style stage with seats all around it. This is my favorite set up for a theater, it makes the actors perform in all directions and I think it looks more natural than a Percenium stage which is what we see in most theaters.
This company is very special because it is also a community troupe and one of the only community theaters that is reviewed regularly by local critics. It's great to see such a popular amateur theater in a town full of professional companies.

Few people know that Minneapolis is a breeding ground for big acts. If you're an inspiring musician, the Quest is an excellent choice. Just want to see a national tour, come here! Bands such as Underoath, Thrice, John Mayer, Hawthorne Heights, and many others have stormed the Quest. It is the haven for mainstream alternative acts.

More
The Jeune Lune is the most inventive theater troop in the twin cities. Productions range from vaudeville to opera but always maintain a delightful irreverence and timeliness.
The key members of the company never disappoint. They fill every role from direction to acting to writing and set design. The company’s production of the Magic Flute was brilliant, and Steven Epp is the second funniest man on the planet (Marcel Marceau is the funniest).
Unlike the Guthrie, the Jeune Lune doesn’t try to push the same saccharin fluff on its audience every season. They actually try to invent and reinvent. For this reason, the Jeune Lune was awarded the regional Tony this year.
The theater is located in a remodeled warehouse in Minneapolis’s warehouse district. There is some street parking. If you have to park in a lot, it will only set you back three bucks.

More
The Historic Orpheum theatre in downtown Minneapolis is a fine place to see a concert, play, or other type of show. This theatre was built in the early 1920's and it's elegance and grandeur has been restored. Back in the early 1980's, previous owners had modernized, and slightly destroyed the place by draping or painting over grand, guilded beautiful architecture. In the 1990's it was restored to it's beautiful old glory. The place is huge; it seats 2400 people, with it's main floor and balcony seating. When you walk into the huge theatre and get a glimpse of its guilded ceiling and huge chandeliers, you will feel like you are taking a step back into the old vaudeville days of 1930.

If you like to visit comedy clubs, or if you've never done it before, you should visit Brave New Workshop in Minneapolis' Uptown district. The BNW troupe performs several times a week, including a $1 admission Sunday performance. The people are funny, and the audience participation make the experience even more fun. I'd definitely recommend giving Brave New Workshop a try.
