It is okay to go to the Sausage Company but avoid the restaurant. They'll try to rip you off. Poor Customer Service and they took my $20 for a pastrami sandwich when it only cost less than $10. They didn't even cash out the register to see if I was correct or they were. They ganged up on me and said I was wrong. What happened to customer service. It wrecked my trip to the Twin Cities. Watch your purse!

If you like your experiences to be unique, fun, and inexpensive, you absolutely must check this place out. I've been haunting it since a Professor Kramarczuk mentioned the store in one of my college classes (25 years ago -yikes!) . One the cafeteria side of the shop, there's beer, wine, fabulous desserts, stuffed cabbage rolls, and my children's favorite: potato vareneky. I like that there's no tipping. On the food/butcher shope side, there's a big meat counter and a delectable pastry cabinet. Call first about the weekend music - it's intermittent, and when someone's playing, it will only be from about 6:30 - 8:00. But man oh man: it's lush to walk in and smell the foods and hear the melodies. Afterward, cross over to Nye's Polonaise Room, or up to Surdyk's, or around the corner to Keegan's.

As a person of (mostly) Eastern European descent, I was very pleasantly surprised the first time I ate at Kramarczuk's. The food brought back fond memories of the ethnic foods I ate when growing up in NE Indiana. The Polish and Ukranian sausages are great, as is the caraway rye. The cafeteria features delicious cabbage rolls, pierogi and strudel. Now that we are living outside of MN, Kramarczuk's sausage is always one of the 'souvenirs' we bring back when we visit- and we ask relatives to bring some when visiting us, too!

ADDENDUM: Kramarczuk's recently went through a total make over and face lift. Much of the old world meat craked white enamel and worn stainless steel deli counter has been cleaned up and newly installed to give it less workclass feel and more of a gourmet supermarket feeling.
The now offer a larger range of products in the market than in the old days and the restaurant has fresh tile on the floor (as opposed to linoeum) and new booth seating compared to the lodging house style dinning room of old.
The Ukranian sausage house, although a historic cornerstone of the neighborhood, was sadly beginning to feel a little out of place with all the booming condo developments and high buck land grabs going on here on East Heenepin.
Walking inside is a retreat into an old world of meat butchers serving up Polska, bacon, blood sausage and smoked bratwurst. The bakery serves up crusty rolls, twisted loafs, kolachis, and if you step over into the dining room that could double as a polka hall in a pinch, you'll find a buffet-styled line-up of bratwurst, Borscht, Golabki, cabbage rolls, goulash to pierogi, and imported beer fit for a construction worker or any hardscrabble laborer that the third wave information age thinks it readily disposed of or, at least, outsourced to India.
On Saturday's they have live ethnic music.
Another Minneapolis institution that should not be missed.

Kramarczuk's East European Deli is the best home made sausages in the world (is that hyperbole? I don't know since just thinking of their smoked bratwurst, Polska, and Ukranian make me drool). They not only have every type of old world sausage, including blood sausage, but they also have bacon CUT TO ORDER! I get mine about 1/4 inch thick. You can get pork chops cut as thick as you want too. They have a bakery that does tons of kolachis, twist bread, and other goodies. As if that wasn't enough, they have imported packaged foods (Curry Ketchup anyone?) and an incredible cafeteria. You can get sausages of course, or Borscht, or Italian Sausage stew, or Cabbage Rolls, Sebastian Joe's ice cream, Imported beers. LIVE ETHNIC MUSIC on saturdays. No, I don't work there, but lets just say that if I had to spend eternity somewhere, this would be ahead of the 70 virgins for me.

Kramarczuk's is an Eastern European (Polish, Czech, and Ukrainian) restaurant and deli. It features cheeses, candies, bakery goods and sliced deli meats, but expertly crafted sausage is really the heart and soul of this place.
My favorite is the Polish Potato Sausage-which is best boiled in an inch or two of water rather than grilled.
This place is quite popular, especially around Christmas time-so to avoid long lines you might want to call ahead.
