This is a good place to go if you want to learn a bit about Swedish history. This was the former home of the Swedish immigrant Swan Turnblad. It is a 33 room castle. As you walk through this castle, you learn about Swedish history and culture. You can see Swedish art decorating the walls. They do have limited hours so be sure to call ahead. This castle is also on the National Register of historic places.

The Walker offers a wide variety of different types of art. Many pieces are done by local artists. There is so many types of art to see, you never get bored. When you are done inside, take a walk to the Sculpture Garden. Here you can see the famous cherry and spoon sculpture that I always try to point out to mu husband when driving on I-94. The sculptures are all unique and fun to look at.

Breathe in Stardust's retro-galactic air. Check out the starry light fixtures and the mural depicting whirling planets and bowling-pin-shaped rockets. The kitschy decor may not help your score, but it always makes bowling more interesting. One of Stardust's stellar promotions is lights-out Cosmic Bowling, which runs the first and third Saturdays of the month from 2pm to 4pm. Be sure to select a blue- or orange-swirled ball. When the lights go out, these balls glow in the dark--along with the pins and the spacey mural. Lanes are $2.50 per person until 5pm, $3 per person thereafter.
A retro-galactic venue near two colleges, where cosmic hipsters toss glow-in-the-dark bowling balls.

I purchased a pontoon swim ladder on-line from Heckel's in Eage River, WI. After I received the item, I discovered it wouldn't work for my pontoon because it would interfere with pontoon lift. When I contacted Heckel's to discuss returning the ladder, I was told there would be a 50% re-stocking fee which I found to UTTERLY ridiculous. For obvious reasons I told them I was disgusted. I then contacted Hannay's (a local marine dealer in St Paul, MN). They listened to my story and decided to help me with my problem. They traded me straight up for a ladder (similar priced) that would work for me and did not take advantage of my situation. I will definitely remember Hannay's for my future boating needs.

REI is the best camping/sporting goods store in the TC. I have purchased all of my equipment here. They have a great co-op program where if you become a member your purchases are tracked throughout the year and then you get 10%back as dividend dollars at the end of the year. You cannot beat this program. it is getting free money for products you buy anyway. REI has only top of the line gear and their prices are competive with anyone, however at REI you get customer service from people just like you, people who are knowledgeable in the department they work in.

I have been a member of REI for years. Being a member means that you get info on sales, & dividends back at the end of the year. They have a wide variety of supplies for camping, & related hobbies ie; climbing, canoeing, skiing, working out. You can rent some stuff if you don't own it. The prices are good on most everything except clothing you can usually get cheaper elsewhere. The clothes (as well as everything else) are high quality though. Not sure about the prices on the rented stuff though. The service is great, if you need info about the equipment, buying it, using it, fixing it, the staff are very knowledgable.

More
After having a less than helpful experience at another running specialty store I tried Marathon Sports on Penn and 50th. Right away all of the employees are friendly and helpful. They ask if there is anything you need help with and what they can do. Recently I had some questions in finding the correct shoe for my foot and the employee happily brought out pair after pair after pair and let me go for short jogs outside on the sidewalks to find out which shoe was just the right fit. Note that there is a treadmill in store for those days that a running test is needed but the weather isn't cooperative. They also have a fairly generous return policy (as long as the sole doesn't show much wear they are willing to exchange).
Marathon Sports has a variety of other running supplies from Body Glide to Fuel Belts, to socks and singlets and shorts. Anything that a runner could need, Marathon Sports either has or is willing to order.
Add to all of this the fact that Marathon Sports is active in the running community. They have fliers for local races in the store, and for some races you can even register at the store and pick up your race packet there. There is always a sign up sheet for a local running club to try out, as well.
Even better, if you are a member of the Minnesota Distance Running Association, you get 20% off on purchases.
The bottom line is that this is a friendly and complete running specialty store and one in which the novice or expert can feel comfortable.
