I think the Weisman is fantastic. I love that it is different, yet it still relates to the campus and the buildings that surround it. The architect was meticulous about daylighting the interior, without ever having direct sunlight on any of the artwork. This is fantastic, as the windows not only let in light, but also offer fabulous views of the campus, river, and skyline. The building itself is a work of art, and it houses some unique pieces, well worth a visit or two.

You can spot the Weisman Art Museum from a ways because it's a big steel sculpture of a building. They house a medium sized collection of contemporary art, of course with visiting exhibits throughout the year. There is one permanent installation that I really enjoy going to each time though, and you should definitely check it out if you go... It's the Apartment. You'll just have to go and see!

Like the architecture or not, ticket prices for the Weisman Art Museum can not be beat. Free admission gets you a look at a decent collection plus some traveling exhibits. If you are on or near the University of MN campus for some reason, why not make a little time and wander through the Weisman.

Frank Gehry designed this stainless steel wonder back in '92. It was to become the first of many similar projects he created around the world, such as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilboa, Spain.
People seem to either love it or hate it, I and I have to say I'm in the first camp. It helped set a trend on the U of MN campus towards more fluid, modern buildings, and away from the ugly International Style meets "riot-proof building" design that had been hallmark of much of the U of MN's new building construction in the past 50 years.
As for the people that gripe that the beautiful sometimes light filled Weisman's Gallery spaces are not appropriate for displaying the works: 1) Craming a lot of work into endless catacombs of gallery space does not necessarily make a great exhibition 2) Visit the Guggenheim in NY., where less is definitely more.
