While there are many spots for artists to play in the Twin Cities metro area, First Avenue stands out as a historic venue in the heart of Minneapolis' Hennepin Avenue. They recently celebrated more than two decades of great music. While it is a bit dirty and slummy, the acts that come thru are top of the line.

I used to like First Avenue much better just a few years ago. They don’t seem to have shows and crowds as good anymore – not sure if it’s related to the reorganization they had or not. It’s never been a “nice and classy” place, but it was cool. I’m hoping that First Avenue is just having a bad couple of years and that it will get back on track again – that would be a pity if this place went out of business.

First Avenue used to be a great venue. It was never pretty. You did NOT want to look around too closely when the lights came up after a show. However, they used to have great bands all the time. That was the days of Husker Du, Prince, Soul Asylum and the Replacements.
Fast forward to now… Unfortunately, they just don’t have that many good shows anymore. What once was the premier alternative club now seems like they can’t get many bands. I really hope that First Ave can pull out of this slump.

With a long an colorful history behind it, First Avenue is one of the premier live music venues in the Twin Cities. Housed in a building that was once a Greyhound station, and with a long list of changed hands and even a bankruptcy closure, First Ave. has a lot of history behind it. Refusing to sell out to Big Media, this club has used its amazing lineup (Dillinger Four played their first headlining show there!) and loyal fanbase to keep its head above water. And since they still sell tickets instead of letting Ticketmaster handle it all, prices are lower than other clubs like the Quest.
