The Riverview is fabulous. The retro decor is well-preserved, the popcorn is worth the calories, and you cannot beat the $3.00 price of admission. One other thing that sets this theater apart from all the others in town is the audience. It might be that I favor the 9:50 show time and get the post-bar crowd, but I have had a blast watching people heckling cheesy moments in serious films with a sardonic, "oh COME ON!!" and cheering on movies like 'The Motorcycle Diaries' with a hearty "show us the revolutionary!"(since the film was about Che Guevara). I have almost always participated in a big round of applause for the crazy epic features like 'King Kong.' This isn't just a night at the movies; this is an EXPERIENCE. I can't imagine what a party 'Snakes on a Plane' will be at the Riverview!

My favorite movie theatre in the Twin Cities is the Riverview Theatre. This theatre was built in the 1940's, but retains decor from the 60's. It is so mod and cool! The decor is fabulous 60's design, very well done. There is a concession stand out front. Many historic pictures from newspapers give you a real sense of the history of the theatre. The theatre itself is huge! Although it is not stadium seating entirely, some seats do rise up. The sound system in this theatre is quite good too. The Riverview shows second run movies. Its a great cheap date night!

Back in the old days (ok, I'm aging myself here), going to the movies wasn't just about sitting in a cookie cutter theater, watching Coke ads and Fandango puppets, while wondering if the dorks behind you would stop chatting long enough for you to hear what's going on. It was about an experience. Getting dressed up. Going somewhere classy. And not having to tap into your children's college fund to do it. That is the kind of experience the Riverview Theater looks to bring back. With their very well maintained theater, glamourous in it's restored retro glory, ONE screen (yes, count it, just one), and authentic buttered popcorn, not to mention the fully reasonable $3.00 price, the Riverview is one of Minneapolis's true treasures. Offering a wide variety of films daily, usually running the gamot from kiddy flicks in the matinee hours, to more indy-artsy fun stuff in the late evening showings, the Riverview has something for everyone. While the seats don't recline, and if you're long legged you'll leave with a cramp, the authentic auditorium seating is enjoyable and promotes a sense of moviewatching community that you don't get at the other chains. Even more interesting is that once in a while you'll get more than just a cheap movie there. This week, they played all three Lord Of The Rings movies, back to back, uncut, starting at 11:00 am, for just $6.00. Where else? And when the Packers cream (I mean, play) the Vikings, you can watch the game on the big screen. Usually for free. Everyone needs to go to the Riverview at least once in their life, or Minneapolis experience, and if you're a resident, this place is definitely worth supporting!

The movies are good quality, they are movies that are not in theaters any more but not out on video yet either. I think it is totally worth the wait to see movies at the riverview and save a lot of money

This is a gem of a theater. Not only is it cheap, but it is immaculately kept. The history of the theater is apparent, and the experience of seeing a movie in an old theater like that is not to be missed. The only drawback is the movie selections. Since they only have one screen, they only show one movie at a time. This adds to making it feel more like a special and unique experience, as opposed to feeling a bit like cattle. Definitely romantic, but also just plain old fun whether alone, or with friends.

Riverview is a complete movie going experience that everybody ought to get out from in front of their DVD player and 60 inch TV screen to endulge. First, the movies are cheap: $2 for children and seniors; $3 for adults. Popcorn is also discounted and the setting inside the restore 1940s movie house is perfect. Theater manager Lauren Williams also takes an adventurous approach to programming for this screen. When I see Hollywood movies come out in general release, I often say I will not pay full price to see a film that is thin on craft and ideas and thick with special effects or comedy, yet, I might take it on for $3 and I am happy to take kids there for the type of movies they find entertaining. BTW, I am not one who things thin, SFX driven, drivel is entertaining as opposed to art films. Good films are entertaining. Bad film suck and are boring. It's just that simple. In addition to second run movies for a few bucks, Williams is a sponsor of the Mpls/St. Paul International Film Festival and Riverside is one of the best venues during those first two weeks in April. And from time to time. Williams will take films off the screen and project big special events like when the Minnesota Gopher women went to the Final Four in basketball or when the Vikings play the Packers. During these special events Williams offers free admission but also offers hot dogs and additional concessions and he knows (as does everybody else) theaters make all their money from concessions as the markup on concessions is ten times their cost while the $3 box office has to be split 19 ways to Tuesday. A great cinema experience, don't miss it!

This is a great movie theater to go to if you just want a cheap night out, and don't mind watching a movie that has been out for a couple of months already. They tend to show a couple of kid friendly films during the day-so its great place to take your child if you are a stay at home parent. The seats are comfortable, and arranged "stadium style". And they use real butter on the popcorn. Little luxuries you don't usually find at your local dollar theater.

Riverview, in my opinion, is one of the better movie theaters in the Twin Cities. Everything from the lobby to the stadium seating in the theater has a unique and fun 50’s vibe to it. The movie selection is great as well. In addition, they have late night showings featuring recent favorites like Moulin Rouge and Napoleon Dynamite and old favorites like The Goonies and Rocky Horror Picture Show. To top it all off, tickets cost an unbeatable $2. This theater is one-of-a-kind and you're getting a lot for your $2!
