I was visiting from Chicago this week, and my friends in Minneapolis met me at Fuji Ya for some sushi and sake. The sake list was very impressive, the service was great, and the sushi definitely surpassed the usual sushi fare I have eaten at home.I know where I'll be visiting again on my next trip to the Twin Cities!
Pros: Fantastic sushi!Great place!

Officially, Fuji Ya is beyond overrated. I have been here four times now and each time the staff has been rude (excuse me, server? but your art degree isn't changing the fact that you're bringing me fish) the food was mediocre at best and the prices were a joke. This place is annoying.
Pros: pretty restaurant
Cons: service, annoying atmosphere

Last Wednesday I had dinner in the main dining room. A private room was arranged ahead of time and we were sat immediately despite the packed bar and lounge area. This was my second visit. My first experience was in the front room where I had drinks and food with a friend but a terrible waitress, forgetful and unprofessional. I wanted to give Fuji-Ya a second chance. Unfortunately the food was just ok, nothing outstanding, our waitress was just ok, not horrible but very uninterested and definitely seemed to be just going about the motions. Now, the part that really bummed me out was the family with a bunch of kids running around the adjoining table/room that were so loud we could hardly carry on a conversation. I'm all for bringing your children out for dinner, but these people's kids were beyond loud and unruly. Overall, the food, service and atmosphere really disappointed me for the evening I had planned. The best part of the evening was the crab cake appetizer that I thought was flavorful and the presentation was beautiful. Not enough of a reason to ever return however.
Pros: Location
Cons: Servie

I was a little nervous to try Fuji-Ya after reading the past two reviews, however, we decided to give it a try anyway...and I'm glad we did. I know what good sushi should taste like (I frequently eat sushi in Hawaii, California and Seattle) and I can vouch that Fuji-Ya has fresh fish. The yellowtail, white toro, eel, and salmon were all very good. I was disappointed that they were out of blue fin tuna which is my favorite. I wasn't as happy with the scallop, which tasted a little fishy. We also tried a couple vegetarian rolls which were great. I did think the cucumber roll was overpriced...almost $5 (they are usually $2-3). Our waitress was very friendly and helpful, even after a big dinner rush came in. We also received a hot towel before dinner which was a nice touch. I would recommend Fuji-Ya to others looking for good sushi and would go back again.
Pros: Fresh sushi and good service
Cons: Would like a wider and more exotic selection of sushi

Both food and service was just horrible. Fish didn't taste fresh and the sushi rice was kind dry. Our server was very unfriendly.

I know I know, I couldn't believe it either, especially after reading the reviews contained herein, but...
After walking in to Fuji-Ya and noticing that behind the sushi bar resided two young dudes of Mexican persuasion (and I do mean 'dudes'), I kinda knew what I would be in for.
The "dudes" didn't disappoint....They dished some horribly weak sushi...the fish was thin and tasteless, the Tako was as rubbery as your grandmothers garter, our waitress was rude and "hurried" even though I was there on an as un-busy weekday night as could be imagined in downtown St Paul.
Did I mention the goofballs behind the bar?? OMG! They stood there grinning like Cheshire cats, slicing the horrible, tasteless fish, with Grinch-like, knowing smiles like they knew we were all suckers for being there.
I would never, ever go back.
Pros: Uh, at least they serve alcohol.
Cons: Sushi, service/waitstaff

The BEST sushi place in town! The service here is awesome and the atmosphere is upbeat. For those that want a little more intimacy, the main dining room is nice and relaxed. I prefer the sushi bar where coversations are abundant and sake bombs are tempting. Food here is top notch and if you are not a sushi lover, there is an awesome black angus tobanyaki (sp) dish that will make you come back for more. If you havn't been here, give it a try!
Pros: Food, Service, Fun!
Cons: Parking..not Fuji Ya's fault

This being my first Twin Cities Sushi, I have to say that it is my favorite so far- in MN! The happy hour prices are unbelievable- the service was great- and the ambiance was perfect! At an uptown restaurant you can't expect anything less than a full house; this place measures up in more ways than one. They have a great selection of sushi and appetizers and if you're lucky enough to make it during happy hour you'll be greatly pleased with the prices. Half price bottles of wine on Thursday's; how can you beat that?! Get there early if you want to get in on happy hour; people generally line up outside!
In a nutshell; if you live in the Twin Cities and haven't been to Fuji-Ya yet, you need to stop what your doing and go now! If you are in from out of town; make this a must on your list of dinner stops!
Pros: Happy Hour!!
Cons: none
