I live out of state. Everytime I come to MN I go out of my way to shop at Surdyk"s. It is hard to explain how good (products & price) you have it in MN. In the DC area your lucky to find Americam cheese, and wine, your prices are unbeliveable!

Another early entry in the neighborhood artisan food shops, Broders Cucina Italiana has been a South Minneapolis institution for eaters on the fly. Order a thin crust, dry roasted pizza that is full on flavor but light on heavy sloppy ingrediants -- a style not all three-cheese in crust, five topping eaters go for but really the best. You can sit down and eat your Mediterranean salads, paninis, slices, imported meats, and lush deserts at the cafe tables scattered around the retail areas or take it all to go and see if you can succeed at getting it home before noshing it all down in the car during your drive. Order cookies and baked items individually or by the dozen. The fun and challenge at Broder's is putting together your own meal from the many items on display. If you'd rather order from the menu, Broders has opened a sit-down restaurant with waiters across 50th Street, however, in my experience much of the character and flavor is lost in this location and the deli is so much more reminiscent and faithful to immigrant salumeria and artisan grocers in large cities around the world.

This is possibly the biggest Vietnamese restaurant in Minneapolis. Its shinny red vinyl booths seat about 150 people-but I have never seen this restaurant more than a quarter full. It’s located on the south end of “Upper” Nicollet Avenue, behind the Kmart that is unfortunately still blocking North/South Traffic along Nicollet.
The restaurant serves a standard menu of Vietnamese dishes, the spring rolls are a standout, everything else is pretty good. If you are not a fan of screaming headaches, make sure to request “no MSG” for your dish-they tend to pile it on here more than any other restaurant I’ve ever eaten at.

If you demand your grocery store to be as refined (and pricey) as a fine dining restaurant, then Kowalski's is your place. The meat is prime, the cheese imported, the bread artisan. The produce is architecturally arranged with nary a brown spot in site. The floors are carpeted, and the lighting subdued. And the price fully reflects all this attention to detail.
While the quality and class of the shopping experience takes away a lot of the drudgery of your average trip to the grocery store---Kowalski’s prices are way too steep, especially on your run of the mill gourmet items, such as brie cheese, and olives.
Bill’s Imported Foods has solved my olive dilemma, and the Trader Joe’s opening soon in St. Louis Park will probably provide my brie cheese fix. (Heads-up Whole Foods, and Lund's-your monopoly on imported cheese is in jeopardy as well!)

Zipp’s is a great liquor store. It has a huge variety of booze and very low prices. If you are looking to buy a keg, this is the place. It has many times the varieties of kegs that any other store in the metro does, and if you go on the right day you can find out-of-season, top-end beers at around 50% the cost. Beyond kegs, it has a good beer and wine selection. It also carries several types of Japanese sake, which is pretty rare in these parts. Its selection is pretty comparable to the high-end liquor stores in the area, but the atmosphere and prices are not.

I was happy to experience theirgreat customer service in the bakery department. We ordered our sons Birthday cake from them because they had unique designs rather than the bland sheet cake with a picture on top most other stores provide.
After talking with an actual cake designer we came up with a 'bomb' cake. Spherical and black resembling a cartoon kind to go with his spy theme of "this message will self destruct....."
When we came to pick it up tragedy struck. Thecake decorator had gone to the hospital to have her baby and they didn't haveit done-- YIKES! We were picking it up on the way to the place booked for his party!
Freaked? I was, they weren't. They got right to work and in 15 minutes or so they had it done! AND they gave it too us free for scaring us like that-lol.
Nice people, great service, GREAT cake!

one stop deal , you get your gas and supplies . they have special and are always so friendly staff . (they get to know you ) they have a good variety of things that you may need and do not want to go to the larger store on you way home from work. They also run specials and sales unlike most little stores at gas stations. They also have some produce and many other items you may need in a hurry.
