Jalapeno cornbread is gone. The new breads, butters and spreads are no comparison. The parsley pesto spread was tasteless and the eggnog tasting butter was a little weird. No more dogfish head on draft, service was terrible (there's one girl there that is very good, but she was there with the original owners that knew how to run a restaurant), we ordered wings and they were out, but the waiter never told us and then just brought out our entrees. I used to order the chicken dinner, and it was huge moist and delicious. Now it is dry, salty and tiny. So disappointing, considering it used to be one of only good restaurants in the area that was affordable. I will not be going back :-(
Pros: Ambiance
Cons: Service, menu has gone downhill

the cornbread is gone, they now have inian flatbread, the dry rub for the steak is gone, bbq is gone, and some girl tried to sell me shots at the table as if it were a club, that neon green shot would have paired perfectly with my wine. 4th change of the menu in 6 months, new owners, i'm done with it
Pros: can't think of any
Cons: menu changed yet again, new owner is a rocket scientist

What or what is Jake's doing? Four of us (females in our 30's--all professional with husbands and babies) went to Jake's a couple weeks ago to celebrate a birthday. To our surprise and laughter we were told it was "Cougar Night". Yes, Cougar Night. Not knowing what to expect, we were informed that it is a night when "older" women take center stage. I do NOT classify 32 as an older woman. Based upon the crowd that tried to fill the space, we were immediately offended. Older men (past their prime) sitting at the bar watching TV and sipping drinks was not our idea of a vibe. Maybe they were waiting to pounce the perfect cougar---ie: Joan Collins or Liz Taylor.
We gave it another try this evening, same thing......no young crowd, no activity, no vibe for 4 girls to hang at a bar without their husbands. Mind you, we are not looking for eye candy--rather an environment close to home that resembles New York City.
If we wanted themed nights, we would hopp on a plane to Disney World. Is every establishment in Miami going the way of homogenization? Come on, it's South MIami where individualism thrives. Needless to say, we left early and went to Town. As much as we are over Town, it did create the atmosphere 4 NON cougars were looking for.
We are quite offended by a somewhat decent business that wants to use older woman as a hook for a themed night. In Las Vegas they call this a brothel.
Go back to the basics and stop the show. No one cares.
Pros: Decor
Cons: Lack of authenticity

Jake's Bar, as it used to be known has a special place in my heart. It was the restaurant I took my now wife on our first date, where I later asked out, where we and several friends came to have drinks the night I proposed, where I went to celebrate getting into and graduating graduate school, and where I would just frequently eat on a regular basis.
My wife and I loved the duck nachos, she loved the ribs, and I absolutely loved the meatloaf and steak. Needless to say, we know the place.
I recently took a group of friends, excited; only to find this new pretentious decor, akward vibe and a sever case of personality disorder. The Gastropub wants to be a Pan-European restaurant, but fails. The prices have been raised, and all the classics are gone. The classics have been replaced with modernistic European dishes that neither satisfy or impress.
One friend ordered a walnut salad, and received a handful of greens with literally four walnuts in it, all for the price over $13.00. I ordered a raw tuna dish which turned out to be four small pieces of tuna accompanied by a couple wedges of flat bread. I could go on and on.
In the end I was extremely embarrased because my wife and I hyped this place up to all our friends, and in the end it was outright laughable. I apologized to them for the mistake.
It breaks my heart to have a restaurant so dear to my wife and I turned into this mockery. I don't say this often, but I hope this venture fails. When so many other great restaurants falter in these economic times, it would be a crime to keep The Gastropub at Jake's open.
Pros: Location
Cons: Too numerous

As a frequent diner at Jakes in South Miami, I have supported this "local" restaurant for many years. Recently (last two weeks) this neighborhood bar and restaurant has gone through a refreshing update including some new food items to a very inviting, current interior design. The upgraded food menu has some interesting choices like: Boards (several International nibbles offering fresh crudites, cheeses, and pates) to my favorite -- Lucy's Special (a mouth watering pork roast served with delicious pickled onions and a mojo cream sauce brought to your table in a cast iron crock) it is the BEST. As always, the staff is friendly, the drinks poured well, and the food --delicious, including my old favorite Patrick's Special. A terrific achievement in the art of re-inventing one's self.
Pros: The new decor, new food items
Cons: Parking (or lack of)

I don't want to slam any venture especially in these uncertain economic times, but I must say I don't like the new vibe of Jake's in South Miami. My wife and I, along with several other couples frequented Jake's several times per month. We also always brought out of town guests for good food in a great local environment. This new re-incarnation of The Gastropub is very bizarre--purple walls and white wood; it changed the local, no pretense feel. We went last week and had an alright meal with ok service. The atmosphere is what we miss. Sometimes you don't mess with something if it isn't broken.
Pros: somewhat of good value for drinks and food
Cons: decor, atmosphere

I'm not sure what all of these other posts are complaining about. The Gastropub at Jake's is still Jake's but better! The new look of the restaurant is clean and bright. Overall, quite an improvement (just check out the bathrooms!!). The food is great... most of the old favorites are still there and there are plenty of new favorites to discover (try the mussels). The best part about Jake's was the neighboorhood feeling, great food and fun staff, all of those things are at the Gastropub, just in a much better looking package.
Pros: Everything!
Cons: Lack of parking

I'll be honest-I normally don't think about writing reviews. Heck, I actually created an account for this site just so I could say my piece. I always liked Jakes-good food, nice atmosphere, and a great bar. Jakes was a place where you could sit at the bar and relax with some buddies, or bring the kids in and have dinner at a booth or table. It didn't pretend to be something it wasn't. Well, that's obviously changed. Now the place looks like a cross between a discoteque and a french bordello. I don't want to sit at the bar-they painted the entire thing white-looks like a roman temple now, and as for the rest of the place, well, words cannot describe the 'new look.' And what's up with the name? Is is Jakes? Gastropub? Gastropub Jakes? Make up your mind, whoever is running this show. And bring back some of the old favorites. My wife and I used to love the ribs on your menu. And where the hell is the bread pudding? I used to come in specifically for that.
Good luck with your new look and menu. You'll need it.

i was just reading all these reviews and thought to myself they must be joking, these must be employees writing these. jakes always had a warm inviting atmosphere, when i sat at a booth tonight (with my kids) there was a book on display called intercourses with a woman covered only with flower petals on the cover. explaining that to my kids was not part of the dinner plans. the hostess was standing behind what appeared to be a concierge counter. the place is loud, i noticed they took off the sound panels on the wall i usually sit by. and they painted the bar white, they destroyed the most beautiful part of the place. they no longer have duck nachos on the menu. not sure what they're turning this place into but if i had wanted that i would have gone to a place like that, i came looking for a warm neighborhood place, not a bunch of servers in tiny shorts spackled with make-up
Cons: they don't make the duck nachos anymore
