I?m not sure how often the information on this site is updated so I decided to weigh-in on Jer-ne restaurant located at the Ritz-Carlton Marina Del Rey. According to this site and several others I?ve investigated, Jer-ne serves a rather confusing fusion of East Asian cuisines. Nothing could further from what I saw on the menu last week.
With a new Chef comes change and in Jer-ne?s case the change is extreme and its more than welcome. Chad Minton previously of the Mosaic Bar and Grille in Vancouver British Columbia has put a local, sustainable and all-natural stamp on the simple yet inspired menus at the restaurant. Minton is quoted as describing his cuisine as ?sophisticated not complicated? and that?s evident from the menu?s sparse almost cryptic descriptions to its simple yet delicious combinations.
Take for example the tomato salad dressed in extra virgin olive oil, minus 8 vinegar (it?s a Canadian thing) Buratta Mozzarella, micro basil and course salt. The salad is presented without fuss and I never got the feeling that too many hands were on my food; personally I do not like it when I received a plate that looks like it came with assembly instructions from Ikea. Simple food that tastes great. The black cod was pan fried and served with a creamy corn, braised baby leeks and perfectly roasted baby beets garnished with a beet and truffle mousse. The flavors ?popped? on the palate and worked well together. Again the presentation was refined but not pretentious. Everything worked. Everything including the impressive wine cellar and handsome service I received was top-notch. The young man that served me was one of the better servers I?ve had in Los Angeles, maybe he is a ?server? by trade and not an ?actor? posing as a ?waiter? until his big break comes along??!! All things considered the Jer-ne restaurant has come a long way from its far-East beginnings and for this writer/eater it?s a journey that Jer-ne needed to make!
Pros: beautiful water front location, five star, five diamond, cuisine, service, lunch
Cons: valet only

Just a short cab ride to the airport the Ritz-Carlton is a tremendous hotel with beautiful rooms, great marina views and first rate employees who are determined to make your stay enjoyable. As a 'road warrior' who travels frequently for business I always look forward to staying in Marina Del Rey at the Ritz.
Pros: Service, Views, Rooms

I stayed at the Jolly Roger Hotel in July and I enjoyed my stay. Our room and the hotel was very clean and the staff were very helpful and proffessional. The manager David was very helpful and even allowed a 3:00 pm checkout at no extra charge due to my husband not feeling well. The breakfast was much better than the average. I would highly reccomend the Jolly Roger Hotel to anyone looking for a clean, well ran economical hotel the Marina
Pros: clean affordable
Cons: small pool

I stay at a lot of these. They are all about the same. I noticed yesterday 8-24-2005 that they now had free wi-fi access in their lobby and coffee shop. This is a plus for me and I thought I would share it with the community.
Pros: Close by Interstate, Free Wi-Fi

The coffee here is adequate, and the creamer is that lousy, non-dairy, liquid stuff but the outdoor, pool-side seating is the absolute bomb. Where else can you sip a cup of coffee while overlooking the water and million dollar yachts? And another perk is the fact that they have full bar service, too! The food is your typical diner fare, but the prices are also quite fair.

My wife and I spent our wedding night here in May, 2005. We got married in Seattle and needed to overnight near LAX on our way out of the country. The Ritz-Carlton Marina del Rey is close to LAX without being an airport hotel. (I also considered Beverly Hills (e.g. the Pen) and the Hotel Bel Air.
My stay was booked with Marriott points, which technically meant being booked into the lowest category of room. I've read that the standard rooms at this property are tired and small. A better deal would have been to book the Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts rate which was about the same as the best available rate, but came with a marina view, late checkout, and food & beverage credit for dinner and breakfast. Still, my conceit to pay for the whole trip on points got the better of me.
A kind request a few days in advance and we were upgraded to a suite with a direct view of the marina on the 9th floor.
The bellman brought up our bags, brought us ice, and may generally have been the friendliest and most enthusiastic hotel employee I’ve ever come across. He pointed out their complimentary shoeshine service which required only leaving shoes outside the door (a nice feature, very common, but I really like it).
In the room we found the bed turned down with slippers, chocolates, and water bottles on each nightstand. There was a real marble bathroom and a nice bed. Bathroom had some of the most extensive amenities I’d seen, products by Bvlgari plus toothbrush, nail file, etc etc etc.
The balcony extended only about 3 feet, conducive to walking outside briefly but not to spending any time out there. We placed a couple of our leftover wedding cakes out there for the night as a substitute for refrigeration and ate them in the morning with room service coffee.
We walked around the Marina mid-morning and had a nice but pricey lunch at the hotel’s restaurant, Jer-Ne. The duck and cheese eggrolls were outstanding.
This suite was anything but small or tired, a real treat. Not sure how I would have enjoyed a regular room, but I had absolutely no complaints with this one.

For travelers looking for comfortable, moderate accomodations that won't break the bank, check out this Holiday Inn Express. Located just west of Lincoln & Washington, it's convenient to popular areas like Venice beach and the Marina -- and it's not far from LAX. The rooms are clean, rates are very reasonable (especially if you book at least 2 weeks in advance) and continental breakfast is included in the price. It's one of the best values in this area.

This is another exceptional property. It is well maintained, and the rooms are good sized though not what I would call spacious. But parking is free, WiFi is free, and the staff is bend over backwards friendly and helpful, Not that far from the airport (LAX) and there is a shuttle, too.
