Simply put, I've skied most of the top 10 listed and to be honest Mammoth is so much better than any Aspen Mt. it's not even close. Sure Ajax is longer top to bottom but there's nothing there like the top of Mammoth. Jackson is great but talk about a nightmare to get to, and if you're not a quad black dimond skier, good luck. There's no other place like Mammoth, 20 ft of snow can fall in 3 days, then you can be skiing in deep powder on blue ski days that you think someone painted. Simple drive from LA, or any place in Southern Cal and I'd drive right through Tahoe any day to get to Mammoth. The drive along 395 in either direction, from LA or Reno is unreal in beauty. Come spring time you get all the desert bloom, then unreal skiing. And the icing on the cake? The last 2 seasons I've skiied on my birthday which is the 1st day of summer, and on the 4th of July, and the conditions were amazing. Then you come off the hill and hang out at the many lakes and or boat down the road at Crowley, or just take a 2 hour drive through Tioga pass to Yosemite. So if you're looking not only for great skiing, cause the mountain will challenge every level of ability without boring you, you also get the adventure off the hill as well. No other resort offers so much to do in nature on and off the hill. If you ever get the chance, ski it in summer when you can do all the other things around the area as well, take 5 days and do something different everyday and ski each day as well. Oh, as for night life and things to do in town, it's ok, but you'll run out of things to do there in a hurry. Not a Aspen social scene, but wilderness like no other.
Pros: A mountain for every level, snow almost year round, wonderful people, easy to get to.
Cons: Weekend crowds, bad storms if you get caught in one. Limited night life.

The cafe has the yummiest pie in the whole world! Whenever my family takes a trip to Mammoth we make sure we make time to stop in for some pie. Their mud pie is my favorite! They are big pieces of pie so save room, because you're going to ant the whole thing!

We booked late to make our trip to Yosemite this summer so we were limited to places on the east side of the park. Prime Yosemite locations were going for $130-$600 a night. So at $90 a night, we made up for the gas that we spent driving the extra hour every day. Mammoth Lakes is absolutely charming. Even in the off season there are restaurants, bars and things to do. After long hikes in Yosemite the hot tub was a welcome sight. We were always out too early to enjoy the continental breakfast, but we understood from other guests it was nice. The decor is mauve and forest green, very 80s, but the place is still in good condition and clean. The wet bar, fridge, microwave and dishes in our room made packing lunches and apres hike cocktails easy. Don't leave food in your cars...we had a run-in with a bear. No damage done, the police arrived before the bear got too curious.
Pros: The least expensive for the vaule
Cons: 1980's decor

We stayed at this resort on our honeymoon and first anniversary. We loved the deluxe cabin - very clean cabin, nice bathroom with jacuzzi tub and steam shower. The kitchenette had everything we needed to make a few meals. The staff was very helpful in making arrangements.

I love staying at this condo whenever I come up to Mammoth. The views of the Sherwins is amazing and Mammoth Creek is just a stone's throw away. And you can walk to the Stove for breakfast or dinner. It's always clean and pricing is pertty standard for the area.

Our family has been staying here for about 30 years every summer! They are always clean and the kitchen cabinets are well stocked with everything you need to cook for you family. Because they are individually owned, be sure to go on the website where you can actually see pictures of the condos that are available to rent. Being that it is older, there are condos that look like they are stuck in the 70's. However, we always pick the ones to stay in that have been completely remodeled and are beautiful inside! We like the 2 bedroom with a loft units. Perfect for our family of four and the kids each bring along a friend, too. The pool and jacuzzi are nice for after a day of hiking & horseback riding. Ping pong table has always been a favorite too. They have a laundry room to use, as well!!

Beautiful lodge with nicely furnished rooms and suites, many with terrific views of nearby mountains. Located at the base of Mammoth Mountain with a chairlift within walking distance. Good for large family gatherings. Well stocked kitchens. Kids and adults can enjoy the outdoor pool and whirlpools at the end of a summer day. Service was a bit unpredictable -- sometimes staff was extremely friendly and helpful, and other times details were overlooked. Our check-in date was incorrect so hotel did not have our room ready when we arrived; we had to change rooms the next day. Staff were apologetic and did their best to compensate for their mistake. Our bill was calculated incorrectly as well.

Motel 6 located in Mammoth Lakes has some of the most expensive prices of a Motel 6 I have seen. We were recently looking for a place to stay, and were surprised that the Motel 6 was over $100 a night. I was in amazement, when the hotels closer to the mountain were cheaper. The motel is very nice for a Motel 6, but over a $100 is outrageous!
