When you first drive up to the Enzian theater, just north of Winter Park Village in Maitland, you might think you’re visiting someone’s old, sprawling plantation home, surrounded by oak trees and Spanish moss, with a small fountain out front by the steps. But it's a movie theater and one of the most refreshing spots in Orlando.
The Enzian only shows one film at a time - usually for a week or two. They show foreign or independent films that you usually wouldn't find in the chain cineplex.
The one screening theatre is set with small tables, plush chairs, and couches. The somewhat fusty décor is gradually being renovated; some of the seating up front has already been replaced with comfortable and funky couches.
It’s good to get there a little early. Before the film starts a server makes her way to you and your companion and asks what you’d like to drink or eat. There’s a decent wine and beer selection, and some great little appetizers. You order, your food and beer comes early in the film, and you pay before you leave. It’s good to bring cash so you don’t miss the denouement of the film as you’re signing your credit card slip.
It’s an impressive date outing, a source for excellent films, and a comfortable place to spend a weekend evening. I recommend Guinness and popcorn; they go with any film.
Of special note: during the late spring and most of the summer, the Enzian sponsors free, public screenings of classic films on the green on Park Ave. in Winter Park.

The Enzian is a non-profit "art house" movie-type place. The theater is outfitted with retro 70's mod furniture complete with tables. You sit down at any table (except the one's that are reserved for members of the theater) and a waiter seasonably comes around and takes your order. Then menu is wonderful, full of all sorts of tasty treats. Best of all, they have a wide selection of beers on tap and in bottles.
The Enzian also has monthly "midnight movies." In June they showed "Bottle Rocket." The theater also sponsors monthly showings of classic movies in Winter Park's central park.
