I love this locally-owned franchise (now with five locations: Madison East, West, Sun Prairie, Fitchburg and Oshkosh), although in all fairness I have to say I have only been to the Schenk's Corners location and am only reviewing that location.. (I have also heard, but can't verify, that GNP uses its own grease to power its hybrid delivery vehicles for the free delivery offered. I hope this is true!)
Hospitable environment, dark enough to be comfy, enough ambient lighting to see your food, your dining companions, and the fact that it's a clean place. Kid friendly, and friendly staff.
Aside from a full bar upstairs, the Atwood location restaurant has a cozy lower level bar with tables, couches, tv and a pool table (the whole basement reminds me of someone's parents' party basement--a plus, in my book). They even have good, local beer as well, along with the standard pop, juice, etc.
Now the important part, the food: There is a complement of delicious, unhealthy and fairly standard appetizers like onion rings, garlic bread, fries, cheese sticks etc.
The pizza is fabulous. Hearty, just enough grease, with build-your-own options side by side with specialty pizzas like the thai pai (peanut sauce, chicken, assorted vegetables) and the mediterranean (pesto, olives, feta, etc.). I have tried nearly all the specialty pizzas, and a few build your own; the only pizza I could not eat: The Chicken Cordon Bleu (Honey Mustard Sauce, Deep Fried Chicken Strips, Ham, Swiss & House Blend Cheese). This pizza nearly killed me on the spot).
The eatery also offers pasta dishes, cold and hot subs, specialty or build-your-own salads, fish and desserts (big cookie, cheesecake). I have not tried any of these dishes--the pizza always seduces me first.
I never feel particularly healthy walking out, but I always feel deeply satisfied and right with the universe.
The menu, store locations and history can be viewed at glassnickelpizza.com, and there are often coupons on the site.
