I used to get my hair cut here before I moved to to Northern CA. I loved the decor and atmosphere of Salon Goo. Located in Melrose, the salon is teeny-tiny, but bursting with character. It took me a while to find parking on the street, and I had to re-feed the meter a few times, but I loved my haircut and color both times I went! I highly recommend Jillian (if she is still there) - she even got a little experimental with my haircut. Don't be intimidated by the staff and their hairstyles and hair color, which tend to be different, but this place is in Melrose, so who cares? I wanted something a little funky, but cute, and that's exactly what I got! I would go back in a heartbeat! I think a haircut here fell in the range of the $50s-$60s. I haven't been there in over a year, so it might have changed since then.
PROS: Cute and funky, definitely worth the trip and price!
CONS: Parking difficult

Rita Flora can be deceiving from the outside, as it is not just a restaurant, but also a floral shop. This is a great asset to the restaurant, as it creates a romantic ambiance to the dining room, and provides gorgeous flowers for all the tables. The food was delicious and well-priced, and they had a good selection of beers and wines. Overall a great place that I look forward to visiting again!

This is the NPR station in LA. KCRW mixes the aesthetic (new, upcoming music, art/food reviews, readings) with the intellectual (news and talk shows). This is one of a few stations that doesn't insult the intelligence of its listeners and bombard them with advertisements. KCRW is commercial free. It's like a radio version of PBS: it gets part of its funding from not just the government but from its listeners. They hold pledge drives two or three times a year. Listeners who subscribe to the station become members and get a "Fringe Benefits" card, which gives them discounts and deals from LA businesses. I like to listen to "Morning Becomes Eclectic" with Nic Harcourt every weekday from 9-noon. He features new and upcoming artists from various musical genres and has them play live in the studio. He has introduced listeners to (before they gained a wider audience) Coldplay, Dido, Beck, Interpol, The Magic Numbers, Earlimart, Brazilian Girls, Moving Units and many more artists who have yet to have their songs played in mainstream radio stations. There are other great music programs I would recommend, such as "Cafe LA" and "Nocturna" (world music), "New Ground" (upcoming music), "Chocolate City" (indie hip-hop, r&b, soul), "The Drop" and "Metropolis" (electronica and dance music). Almost every hour news from NPR is announced. Personally, I think (just like PBS) the political views are liberal. I'm just saying that to warn those who have political conservative views. "To The Point" brings indepth reports on mostly political issues of the day. "Which Way LA" deals with municipal issues. For those of you who live in Santa Monica, the town meetings are broadcast weekly. If you want an alternative to Clear Channel stations, this is one of them.
