Soap Plant--the neon sign out front glows "Wacko"--is a great little store on Hollywood near Vermont. They sell a mix of books, toys, CD's and other trinkets and collectibles. There is also a gallery that features pretty cool lowbrow art. They cater to various types of hipsters, featuring Beat literature, books on punk rock , tattoos and various underground movements and arts--stuff that is outside the mainstream, but cool outside, not scary for the most part. You could spend hours there.

This place is pretty cool because you always enjoy shopping at a smaller bookstore rather than a huge corporate chain, and this one does the trick. They have a selection of books you wouldn’t find at Barnes and Noble, especially if you’re into art. However, prices tend to be higher due to the overhead, etc. Still a very cool place.

Soap Plant carries those hard to find books that the big chains do not carry. They have a wide variety of books from tattoo art to the modern art movement. The bookstore has the feel of an old bookstore that you find off the beaten track. The clerks consists of quite sullen looking young adults who are quite helpful and knowledgeable. The bookstore also carries other items like collectible toys, serigraphs, prints, cards and gift wrapping supplies. We actually come here once every few weeks to see what they carry. If you want want to make the trek out to Hollywood, come and visit this store.
