Recently added to the growing center of Downtown Los Angeles, the Walt Disney Concert Hall is a must visit. Its spectacular architecture and design, dreamed up by Frank Gehry, is so eye-catching and interesting. If you only have a short time free, definately at the very least go to visit the outside of the building. It's sleek metalic curves will definately impress the eye. Then if possible walk inside to the lobby. You may be lucky enough to catch some of a free show. The Los Angeles Philarmonic has its home in the Walt Disney Hall between October and May/June, so in order to catch a spectacular orchestra, go then. Within the past few years, they have begun holding leased events. The sound in the Walt Disney Hall is absolutely on par with its outside structure and design. The inners of the hall were designed with the exact intent of carrying the clearest and best possible sound quality available. And they do. You are surrounded and drowned in the music of the Concert Hall. Also, the Hall is centrally located near the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion, as well as the Ahmanson Theatre and the Mark Taper Circle. Also just down Grand Avenue is the Los Angeles Central Public Library. A little bit further is the exciting Grand Central Market and Little Tokyo. A trip to Downtown LA to visit the Walt Disney Hall is a necessity for any traveler or resident of Los Angeles/

The Greek is a beautiful outdoor theatre and is my favorite venue for a concert. Fresh air and the stars! Don’t forget sometimes it gets chilly so bring a jacket and check the weather. Parking is 10 dollars and it takes a long time to pay then park your car and after the concert you have to find your car and fight the traffic out. If you have the energy to hike up the hill I would recommend parking your car at the bottom of the hill, it’s worth it. The only other thing I can to mention is the venue is in a residential area so the concerts usually end right on time or before they are finished because of local noise laws.

My TA recommended this place to me as a complement to our poetry class. I found the poetry to be different what I expected - there wasn't any 'haikus" that I was expecting. It was very full and the people there are really there for the poetry. I ended up with an A- in my poetry class, and I think my exposure to the different types of poetry may have influenced that grade, because after this I was really interested in poetry.

LA Opera has been around for 20 years and has already established itself as an important world opera company. Placido Domingo is the director and a frequent performer and conductor. Kent Nagano is the outgoing principal conductor, and he will be missed. The company does a good mix of standard repertoire and some more daring productions. They perform at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, which is still in pretty good shape. It gets a little hot up at the top, though, so it's worth the extra money to sit downstairs if you have it.

The El Rey is a great place to catch live music, particularly for those who prefer the smaller club settings. The venue has an art deco feel to it, with its deep red hues, plush couches and vintage chandeliers. The venue itself holds several hundred; most stand on the floor but there are seats along the perimeter and upstairs. The club books a wide variety of acts, from hip hop to alt rock, so the crowd changes accordingly. Parking is a nightmare, but there is valet service -- a little expensive but worth it.

This is a magnificent place to see operas! I love operas but it could be costly so I usually buy the cheap balcony ones. But they always put on such fantastic shows that I never mind too much that I have to bring my binoculars with me! Their voices are so beautiful and just makes me tingle inside! I enjoy their operas so much that I decided to give myself a treat by becoming a member and just bought their annual pass! Now I get to watch them at every opportunity!

I really like the Ahmanson Theatre. I prefer it to the Pantages when seeing a Broadway musical show in Los Angeles, because their acoustics/sound system is much better. Also, the Ahmanson offers more discount tickets and opportunities than the Pantages does. For example, there is HotTix, which can get you a seat to any show for only $20. I did this for their latest production, "The Drowsy Chaperone," and I got to sit in the orchestra! Full price would have been $80-$90. This is a great venue and I highly recommend it.

Skylight Books is a pretty good bookstore for the neighborhood of Los Feliz. They keep a good selection on-hand of what are hip books for the community and have a succesful series of book readings and signings. Even if you happen to miss one of the events, you can usually pick up a signed copy of the book afterward. I saw the late Hubert Selby, Jr. read here once and it was amazing.

I have to admit, I'm not that crazy about the El Rey Theatre. Sure, it's old and the neon signage is cool; I just don't think all that much of it as a place to see shows. It has a great big dance floor, but a lot of the shoes that end up being held there aren't really dance shows. There aren't enough places to sit; if you don't get there early enough to stake one of the few seats there are out, count on getting your dogs tired. It's not bad, it is certainly more intimate than a hockey rink or something, I just think it's overrated. They could stand to lower the prices on beer, too. They gouge you.
