Many people think of Japanese food as sushi only, but it's more than that. The Sawtelle kitchen offers great dinners. Don't bring the kids, though as it's a small restaurant without a lot of wiggle room. I prefer the salmon a wasabi-flavored mashed potatoes. I think they had some nice desserts, too. I don't think they take reservations. it's first come, first serve. also, if you had your heart set on Japanese food and get there only to find out the line is too long, there's a whole bunch of other Japanese restaurants within walking distance on Sawtelle.

Japanese Californian fusion means tasty interesting food like meatloaf with demi glace, yams with plum mayo, a huge lamb shank that is falling off the bone, a nice eggplant appetizer and a unique ambiance that would appeal for a reasonable romantic date. Where is the Japanese? On the menu and serving the food. A quaint spot that hits the spot. They also have a nice patio for outdoor dining, but it fills up quickly. So far everything on the menu has been great. lOts of taste.

If you're looking for fine fusion cuisine at a reasonable price and at a spot that is not egregiously trendy and fake, then the Sawtelle Kitchen is for you. Housed in an art decco single story converted house, the Sawtelle Kitchen serves delicious Japanese-European fusion cuisine. It's tucked away from the hustle and bustle of West LA on the short strip of Sawtelle Blvd that is affectionately referred to as Little, Little Tokyo. Admist a sea of small mom and pop owned Japanese stores and eateries, Sawtelle Kitchen stands out as a nice romantic dinner date spot -- especially if you can get seated in its outdoor patio. Top appetizers include the yams and mayo as well as the eggplant. Main entrees include the absolutely to die for meatloaf and lambshank. Dessert is stil great, although not as exploratory and daring. Don't forget to sample their tea selection at the end of your meal!
