My parents brought me to Philippe's when I was younger and I've been there a few more times since then. They're known for their famous french dip but they other things on the menu that I hear are good. But I get the french dip every time I have been there so I don't know what else to recommend. The place has sawdust on the floor and they have the hottest mustard ever there. So if you want to clear up your sinus then just head over to Philippe's and pile on some of their hot mustard on a sandwich.

Probably the only place in Chinatown/downtown where you'll find free parking, Philippe's offers their famous french dip. You can choose to single or double dip your sandwich. They have meats to choose from such as beef, lamb, turkey and pork. I didn't try the beef because I am not allowed to eat red meat, but the turkey was okay. I guess if you're going to have a french dip, get a french dip! They also have 9 cent coffee and desserts like cheesecake. The atmosphere is pretty cool - they have saw dust all over the floor and old fashioned telephone booths and old fashioned water dispensers. It is definitely a great experience.

Philippe's is an original LA restaurant with sawdust shavings on the floor, a train museum downstairs, and lemonade that stills sells at $.19 (I think). They make pork, steak, lamb and turkey sandwiches, covered with a gravy from the meat. you add their special mustard sauce with some coleslaw and you're set. The also serve different pies and hard boilded pickled eggs (a Polish tradition). You can read about tis history and take a stroll in Chinatown or Olivera Street afterwards as you'll need some time to digest all that food you ate. It's also a couple blocks form the Union Street train station, so if you're waiting for someone to pick you up, you may want to grab something to eat in the meantime.

They also serve potato salads, macaroni salads, chips, sodas, lemonade, coffee, desserts etc. and they are always crowded too! so if they are crowded, you know they are a good place to eat... prices used to be better, but still not too bad...

downtown l.a. has a history with phillippe's.... i saw this place on pbs... they were doing a report on how old the place is and how often the people flock to this place.... it truly is a historical place.... don't be surprised to see hundred of old people there.... remember- it's a historical place..... lets talk about the food..... this place is notorious for their sandwhiches and cole slaw.... i think the food is average but the actuall place is really nice..... it;s so non-l.a..... the lemonade rocks though and it;s less than a $1!!!!!!!!!!!!! nice place to see nice people and the food aint so bad....

I always get the turkey sandwich with a bowl of straight chili with a 50 cent glass of homemade lemonade. The lines can be long but they go by quite fast. I have never been there when it was not crowded, the business is great! They also have a candy stand near the front entrance with all kinds of goodies.you cant visit downtown WITHOUT going here! Its a classic! Frech dip subs, purple eggs and 9 cent cups of coffee! The owners make you feel like friends not customers and the resturant is old, warm and cozy! Take a metro ride into grand central station and there you are!

Inventor of the French Dip this historical landmark in China Town still serves up a fine sandwich along with tasty beet eggs and the spiciest mustard around (not for the faint of heart or sinuses). Any visitor to L.A. must stop in and grab some tasty grub served from the counter to you in the huge saw dust scattered dining area. Even if you don't think you like the idea of a sandwich dipped in au jus try it and I am sure you will be converted.
