I look forward to each visit I take to Echigo. You practically cannot go wrong with anything off of the menu. My gf and I try to check out one of the specials on the board everytime we go. We kinda went overboard the last time we went on items from the board. We ordered Loup de Mer, Butterfish(very succulent), Blue Crab Roll(my favorite roll that I order everytime), and monk fish liver. The warm rice is a unique novelty that I like about the place and the gentle reminders on which pieces not to dip in soy sauce are always welcome. I'm surprised its never packed when we go but it makes for a cozy evening where I can relax and not have to shout to be heard. All in all, a truly fabulous dining experience.
Pros: sushi, service
Cons: no dessert menu

I'm a sushi snob from NYC and I'm shocked to report that the best sushi I've found in LA to date is in a run-down strip mall on the second floor.
Folks in LA I talk to are not shocked--the best food in LA is found in run down strip malls from what I've been told!
This is sushi only... no soup, no salad, no tempura.
It's Tokyo style which means the rice is warm and filled with flavor.
You get once piece at a time... even at a table. That's the way sushi should be served--so the temperature is correct. Anyone who orders a sushi deluxe is an idiot because the 15 pieces site for 10 minutes while it's being made and when it comes to your table with three others sushi deluxe plates you might as well have bought your meal at the Whole Foods sushi counter.
Amazing, amazing sushi...

This is one classic example which I was completely misled by the reviews here! Went to Echigo after I read the raving reviews and a thumbs-up recommendation from a friend; I have to tell you, I was a little disappointed. While the waitresses were attentive and the fish was fresh (but on the chincy side), I just couldn't understand why the rice would keep falling apart right in front of my eyes! After reading other reviews, apparently it didn't only happen to me, so it wasn't an "off" night for the chef. I was a little shocked to read that people like it because it's warm! My sushi-loving friends all agreed that with the rice like this, theyll flunk out of the sushi academy in Japan in a heart beat!
Pros: Service
Cons: Rice

I am no connoisseur of sushi, but this is by far the best I have ever tasted. Sitting at the bar for chef's choice is definitely the way to go; you will spend $30+ per, but you have the opportunity to watch a master at work. If you have fish like this available to you, I can't imagine why anyone would want to cook it!
Pros: fresh seafood, courteous staff, quiet atmosphere
Cons: upstairs

I have to take issue with reviews by people who apparently know nothing of sushi. The wasabe is soft because it's fresh. The sushi is served one tray at a time because that's they way they serve it. It's warm-rice sushi and has some of the most amazing cuts of fish on it you'll find, period. I've had barracuda and flying fish sushi there! There is little to no ambiance, but face it, you're there for the food--and it is amazing. Oh, and they have an $11 lunch special which can't be beat.
Pros: fantastic sushi, fresh wasabe
Cons: crowded at times, no ambiance, mixed service

Pros: cheap, good parking, not crowded at lunch
Cons: thin cuts of fish

I've been here a couple of times, and every visit has been wonderful. If you don't want to spend crazy monies on omakases, this is the place for you, it comes out to less than $40/person. From the outside, it looks like any japanese rest. but to my surprise, the sushi is 10x better than the way it looks. Compared to Sasabune, this is just the same, but cheaper! Sushi Tenn can't even compare. The baby tuna/toro is awesome! Whatever the sushi master gives you, just eat it!
Pros: Service, Great Sushi, Good Parking
