Doughboys is a trendy restaurant on 3rd, just down the street from The Grove. I’ve gone a couple of times now, because I like the change of pace from the feel and the people on the West side of LA. I’ve wanted to love it, as it’s very popular, but I just can’t. The service there is done with an attitude of, “do I have to”? Never once did I get a smile, let alone, eye contact. The food I’ve had the last two times I’ve gone has been fairly good, not fair, not good, in between. Maybe I’ve just chosen the wrong items (hot breakfast cereal this time, can’t remember the last) and maybe I shouldn’t expect my coffee to arrive without having to ask for it twice. I do love the feel of the place, but that has more to do with the energy of that part of town and the guests and then the restaurant’s vibe. The host was a nice guy, he stood out because of it. Bottom line: go for the company you take and for the “cool” of an extended wait to sit and eat breakfast.

Doughboys is a restaurant/bakery that always has friend breads and baked goods. There sandwiches and salads are extremely fresh and tasty gourmet dishes. Everything is extremely affordable (entrées usually under $10) and the portions are so big you can definitely split them. Make sure to order something from the bakery to take home!

When I read reviews of this place I couldn't wait to try it, I went the next week. When I got there I was a little discouraged when I saw the wait since it was such a hot die but was happy to be seated on the inside where there was AC. The menu was inviting, lots of things sounded good. We ordered the nacho potatoes and each got a sandwich. When the potatoes arrived they looked good but were really bland. The salsa that came with them was like tomato paste and ketchup mixed together. I ordered the "Mimi's sandwich" which ended up being like some sort of canned pickled salad mixed with red cabbage. It was awful. I spooned out the salad and ate the crust of the bread, which seemed to be okay. Our waitress kind of forgot about us until it was time for the bill. All in all, it was not great.

the food is great -- especially for lunch or brunch. the onion soup is incredible. their bakery products -- especially breads -- are homemade and yummy!
