You've decided on sushi so don't bother complaining about expenses. Good sushi is expensive period! I've been a loyal customer, whose frequented "Sushi Gen," for the past 15 years. I've never had a meal I didn't enjoy or felt wasn't worth the expense. Compared to many other sushi bars of this caliber, "Sushi Gen" is very reasonably priced. The quality of fish is paramount to the success and longevity of this great local bar. In the heart of Little Tokyo and frequented by the Japanese vacation/business traveler, you would think you were in Tokyo. This bar also has a great local following and is always a good time at the bar if you don't mind waiting. The chefs are quick, witty and incredibly professional. This is an insider gem!

and again, all the good places have long waits...
if you are not there by 11:10 for lunch, you'll be waiting a long time! second shift is about 12:!0, but hard to gauge...
well worth the wait!

It's not bad, but the portions served could be more for the amount of money spent. I had nigiri sushi and my girlfriend had vegetable tempuras. Compared to Hamakawa, except Hamakawa served better quality and more quantity in food. It was good (not better than others) but didn't satisfy my appetite and I ordered an extra round for myself, unbelievable. The seating arrangements were adequate and its got a nice feel to it, a well set up restaurant with great service and vibe.
We spent close to 3 digits and have to pay extra for parking, not really worth it. It's a maybe...if we ever return.
Pros: seating arrangements, ambience, service
Cons: $$$$$, less portions, pay to park

Sushi Gen reminds me a lot of Ebiseu of SF. Both restaurants are local's favorite, since they offer good food at reasonable prices. Both had fish that were ultra fresh and the same weakness. With so many sushi chefs behind the counter, it was difficult to maintain the quality of the sushi rice. The skills of some of the sushi chefs had room for improvement. Although the rice was a very high grade, it was packed too tight in the nigiri and lacked flavors. However, for anyone desires quality fish and not breaking the bank, Sushi Gen is definitely one of the few places to go in L. A.
Pros: Ultra fresh fish

Just went here the other day for the first time in a while, reminded me of why I think so fondly of this place. Friendly staff at this traditional sushi bar serving "bar-none" the best sushi in Downtown Little Tokyo area. Every piece of nigiri sushi was sublime, and the cooked meals the guy next to us ordered looked great. You cannot go wrong at this place!!!
Pros: Great Fish, Friendly Staff, No Attitude
Cons: , Staid Decor

A little hard to find if you've never been there, and very small parking lot. Their yellow tail and sweet shrimp are yummy! If you consider California/Avocado rolls are sushi, don't bother coming here, you're wasting your money and taking away seats from people who likes real sushi.
The bar is the best seat! :-)
Pros: fresh everything!, moderately priced
Cons: might be hard to find, small parking lot
