The Museum of Contemporary Art has several locations. Unfortunately, they seldom seem to be running simultaneously. The branch in Little Tokyo--the "Temporary Contemporary"--is worth visiting when it's open, but at times I get the impression that it is an afterthought to the museum directors. It's not much more than a big warehouse, but I've seen some pretty good exhibits there. The one on 20th century architecture they did a few years back was particularly informative.

One of several locations, this particular branch of MOCA is located near the Disney Concert Hall in downtown. It's an amazing area, and MOCAs changing exhibit is a good reason to visit every now and then. There's a small cafe just outside, perfect for a snack before visiting the gallery.

The Museum of Contemporary Art used to be a vital part of downtown LA, but I don't feel that way about it now. It used to be the museum was free Thursday nights, but the trend now is for MOCA to have big mega-exhibits, which are never open to public without paid admission. When there isn't some big exhibition there, it is anyone's guess whether it will be open at all. The music programing has gone completely downhill; there used to be great jazz performances on summer Thursdays, but the new curator axed that in favor of a half-baked DJ party. No fun. The exhibitions are sometimes worthwhile, though, and there is decent modern art in the permanent collection.

I was interested in visiting a museum which did not have the typical Renaissance paintings and such, and after I went I felt that it was too "modern" for me. Don't get me wrong - this museum is top of the line in the Downtown area of LA, near the Disney Concert Hall. It has great surroundings. I saw many interesting pieces including abstract structures and furniture-like pieces. In the end, I experienced something new but felt that I didn't understand them enough to truly appreciate them.

The Museum of Contemporary Art is a great place to catch the latest modern art exhibits as well as the current pieces on display. The location is in the heart of los angeles and the place is very clean and nicely kept. They have discounts for students and such. There is also a little cafe, but it's nothing too spectacular compared to the MOMA in new york.

When I worked downtown I got chance to see one of their special exhibits for free. WHereas it was a great exhibit and I got to see the whole museum, it was quite small and I am glad that I didn't pay admission or parking. It took about an hour to go through. Parking is expensive and a hassle like pretty much everywhere down town, so if you do go and park, take advantage of it and go see several things. The DASH is a great way to get around and only $.25

The Museum of Contemporary Art downtown is adjacent to the Colburn School of Performing Arts. While I was on jury duty, I spent my lunch hour at the MOCA. The space is small, but I enjoyed the art. I went on a day where the entrance fee is waived. I'm not a big contemporary art fan, so I'm not sure if I would have felt the entrance fee was worth it. My lunch hour seem like almost enough time to see the space and all its contents. There is also a nice cafe/restaurant outside in the courtyard. I think a visit here might be nice if coupled with a visit to the Disney Music Hall or the Music Center down the street. Parking is also a hassle, so be prepared to pay and walk.

The Museum of Contemporary Art is located in a brick red building. They have a wonderful collection of artwork in the contemporary style in paintings, sculptures. The staff there are very knowledgeable too and are able to answer questions about the artists quite readily. The exhibit they have when I visited is the works by Jean-Michel Basquiat's. The only downside is that parking is difficult to find where the museum is located.

Well-designed galleries that offer works up to the viewer rather than close them off. The Hockney show was well-done--taking a large and varied collection of a life's work and making good sense of it all. More managable in scope than LACMA, all of MOCA's galleries can be easily seen in an afternoon--very little museum fatigue at the end of a visit.
