Music aficionados would always need a home, thus Amoeba Music was spawned. The sense of place claims a warehouse atmosphere, white and standard with the countless music posters and artwork on the wall that suggests a sense of colorful frenzy. There are many layers of rows of plastic: CDs, LPs, DVDs, Lasers, Videos, Tapes.
Amoeba Music is an independent music chain in Berkeley, San Francisco, and Hollywood, California. It first opened on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley in 1990.
The Southern California location was added in November 2001, the store opened a new branch in Hollywood, on Los Angeles' legendary Sunset Boulevard (at Cahuenga Boulevard.) (See article.) At the time of its opening, the store was planned to stock as many as 250,000 titles, which would place the store among the largest independent music stores in the world. According to Los Angeles Times writer Michael Hiltzik, the location "instantly became a Hollywood landmark." [1] The L.A. location, at 31,000 square feet, is, it claims, the world's largest indie store. What’s a bonus is that the stores are staffed by serious record freaks who are experts on everything in stock.
A large portion of the stores' business is in used merchandise. Patrons of the store can sell their used music and movies to the store for half of the retail value in cash or 2/3 supposed retail value in store credit. This can be credited to the huge success in earnings despite the profit downfall in the music industry.
The California chain (with stores in Berkeley, San Francisco and L.A.) makes up to sixty percent profit on used CDs, while commercial chains are stuck eking out a twenty percent markup on new CDs alone.
"Big retailers can't keep business going on those margins," says Karen Pearson, co-owner of the L.A. store, "and the consumer gets cheated and pissed off."

Located in Silverlake, Rockaway records is one of my favorite record shops. They have a vast collection of vinyl records, imports, new and used CDs as well as used DVD's. In addition, they buy and sell rare collectibles like LP's, posters, magazines, etc. If you're ever in Silverlake, make sure to stop by Rockaway.

For those who aren't especially excited by corporate, cookie cutter music retailers, give Penny Lane a look. The selection of new CDs and DVDs is good but not extensive -- but the real bread & butter of this store is the used CDs. They have a good selection and it's not uncommon to find a rare jewel for a great price. The store also carries a decent selection of alternative music publications.

Rhino is a fun, funky store with a wide selection of new and used CDs, vinyl and DVDs. Books, shirts and memorabilia round out the merchandise and there's a vintage toy store located within the store. The prices on the toys are a bit high but it's fun to look at everything. The new CD selection isn't the greatest, but the best part of the store is trying to find little treasures in the used bins. Return policy is a bit draconian: exchange only, so if you spend money there, you're not gettin' it back!

The Music Castle is a great place for a professional and beginner alike. The staff will help you out with any questions you may have and that is always a good attribute. It’s so hard to find good people like this these days. I had a very specific question and the owner was happy to help me out.

I have been a fan of Santa Cecilia Orchestra and their quality music at great prices. Their programing is so unique. I looked at their 09-10 season brochure in a local coffee shop and wow! They are opening up Nov. 22 with something no one does, two huge scores that are majestic- Pines of Rome and Paictures at an Exhibition. I can hardly wait. Check out their other offerings, this is where Art is happening!

I went straight here when the new nine Inch Nails record came out because I knew they would have it for a great price. 13.99! Totally cool! I saw it two weeks later at Best Buy for like $16. Forget that. This place is worth perusing, as they have tons of great stuff, even old records.
