On one of my first weekend in LA, I came to the New Beverly and saw "Mullholland Dr." The movie and the New Beverly reminded me of the quirky, funky, and above all interesting side of Los Angeles that gets left out of most views on the city. The theater is pretty ragged on the inside, but the popcorn is cheap, the movie selection is always intriguing, and the company is, like LA, quirky, funky, and interesting.
Not everything in this city has to be polished to a shine. The experience wouldn't be the same if the theater was new, the sound was digital quality, and the clientelle wore Prada...
Pros: Great movies, inexpensive
Cons: no parking

Here’s the thing: if you’re broke or don’t like paying out a portion of your mortgage to see a Saturday night movie, go to the Beverly Center Cinema, not The Grove. It’s also less crowded, which is obviously a huge plus. However, you get what you pay for, in that the seats aren’t as nice and the floor is a bit more sticky.

Although the grove has spoiled me with stadium seating, the beverly cinema is a real gem of west LA. They have great films, regularly do themed double features, and tickets are about half the price of the grove (which means they're $10). It's primarily the old theater atmosphere and the great movie selection of the beverly cinema that makes it such a find. Good popcorn too.

This theater always has a very exciting arrangment of films. I saw "Goodfellas" and "Some Like it Hot" here just to name a few. Even so, this theater is not a fun place to visit. It's often very dirty. The walls, which some people said have "character", to me only look like they need a scrub down. The clientelle consists of creepy old men and bag ladies. The video and audio are absolutely terrible. Video can be fuzzy and audio can go in and out. Not to mention on more then one occasion there was a loud buzzing sound behind the audio. I know the owner tries his best, and I'm in full suppport. I'd recommend at least trying this place out...before it's gone.
Pros: Movie Lineup
Cons: Picture, Audio, Ambience

Six dollars for two great films and thats not just the matinee price. This theater is absolutely fantastic. I was pleased enough to find a theater that would play everything from Old Hollywood classics and fifties European cinema to contemporary independent films but to find such a theater that also plays these films on double bills (grouping films variously by auteur, theme, genre) and for a mere six dollars for both films I am in heaven. I love this theater. If you love film, you will too. Look at their website to get a sample of the large variety of films they show. The chairs are a little uncomfortable and the theater building itself is certainly past its prime but the wear gives the place character. Every theater should have such variety and cost so little. Every business should be run with such care and love for its product.
Pros: inexpensive, great selection, double bill
Cons: poor seats, musty interior

This is a great venue for seeing older, foreign and cult films. Every show is a themed double feature, priced very cheaply. The print quality varies from fairly pristine to highly degraded depending upon the movie's age and current circulation, and it's certainly not the city's fanciest projection system. But that's not the point. This is a theatre with personality and it's all about getting to see movies you might otherwise not, on film, surrounded by other lovers of film.
Pros: Inexpensive, Selection, Crowd
