First attracted by their offer of half of sake, I soon found many more reasons to stay. The lounge was energized and hip, with delicious drinks all around (especially the pineapple sake). The dining room, however, offered sushi house serenity. The food was delicious, and the waiters polite. The balance of elements at Tengu made for a most pleasant evening.
Pros: Atmosphere, food, sake
Cons: AC a little cool

Hands down the best sushi in LA. This place knocks Nobu, Koi and Katsuya completely out of the game. Everything was perfect: the food was superb and the waitress who served us was so incredibly sweet, great service! Event the music was good.
The GM, Mike also came over and offered us a sampling of Tengu?s pineapple infused sake. It was delicious! And because it was Sunday, all of their sake is ? off (5:30 PM to Close). We ended up order two bottles of it. We will definitely be coming back here again!
Pros: food, service, music, SAKE SUNDAYS (1/2 price Sake)
Cons: None

The food here is very good, I'm partial to the sushi. A bit pricier than other places but decent sized portions and nice ambiance. Staff are attentive and friendly.

Josh is the best Sushi Chef there is. Most Awesome creative sushi genius ever. I had an experience of oral ecstasy, I'm addicted, it doesn't matter what he makes... all of a sudden it's my favorite thing to eat. The atmosphere is wonderful... the music, the people, and on top of that the food stands alone as the best sushi ever. Yummmmmmmmmmm
Cons: Expensive but worth every dollar

Absolutely love this restaurant. I've been a regular for some time now, but had an exceptionally good experience just last week when I went there on a date! From the moment you step in, you are met with great ambiance, very modern decor, and an extremely attractive wait staff. The menu is comprehensive and has something for everyone: I love the subarashi roll!! If you want creative rolls this is the place to go....They also have a full bar which makes Tengu a great place to spend the evening. It is great to have an upscale sushi option in Santa Monica!
Pros: Comprehensive menu, great service, ambiance, affordable valet parking

Maybe because it was getting close to closing, or the fact that we were a part of 6 and the tip was guaranteed. The sushi was horrible, and took literally 35 minutes to come out when there were maybe 4-5 tables being served in total. Some of the appetizers were decent, but other than that, the service was poor, food was bad, and ambiance was decent.
Pros: Nothing really other than the ambience
Cons: Slow service, terrible food, difficult parking unless you are valeting

I came to tengu with my parents when they were visiting, which is probably a mistake. My mom grew up in Japan and always enjoys trying Japanese restaurants, and this was one that had been recommended to her by a friend who lives down here. If my parents were bigger cocktail drinkers, it may have been better. We had dinner after 8 pm on a Friday night, so the bar was busy with people drinking and sake-bombing, and there was a DJ playing loud-ish music. It seemed like somewhere I wanted to be with a group of friends rather than some 50 somethings. That being said, however, the food was awesome. My mom, the queen of Japanese cuisine, was impressed by the sushi and small plates they had to offer. I'm sorry to say I can't remember what we ordered, but it was a large portion of the menu (we are big eaters). We left full and satisfied, but needing to extend conversation because it had been difficult to talk inside... that's what you get for going on a friday night I guess !
Pros: fun, good food
Cons: not for parents, loud on friday nights

We had a business dinner at the Westwood location and we pretty much ordered everything on the menu. The asian tartar and the beef wrapped in asparagus are great startes. I really enjoyed the halibut sashimi it was fresh and soft and melted in your mouth. I only tried a couple of their rolls - the zen which I really liked because it is a hot roll and then the diablo but I wasn't a fan. FYI their chocolate mousse cake isnt really mousse its the staple of LA - the souffle cake which is pretty bland. Overall a great place to eat sushi...make sure to watch your bill when you are with a big party they might just end up adding their own tip or adding some extra $ since they think no one will care.

Los Angeles is blessed in having some stellar sushi restaurants and Tengu is considered one of them. What sets Tengu appart besides the dark trendy comfortable ambiance, the freshness of their sushi, and a DJ spinning chill tunes, is the creativity they offer with their appetizers and sushi. We started with a fresh Tuna sashimi mixed with a soy lime sauce and cilantro topping a wonderfully crisp wonton square. Their rolls were all creative and tasty. They also had a great selection of good sakes. Save room for the fried green tea ice cream. Also they are opening up a new location at the Santa Monica Pier. Definitely worth going!
Pros: Creative Suchi, Good Atmosphere, Trendy Crowd
Cons: If you like to eat a lot of sushi it might get expensive
