If you want a mellow, relatively quiet place for a hearty breakfast, or a dark, cozy corner with a large L-shaped booth for late night group hangs, this is a great place. And if you want to take your dad or grandma out for a simplicity-inspired blast from the past, it's perfect. Astro is a Silver Lake fixture and a great example of "Googie Architecture." It harkens back to another time, for sure.
The food won't win any awards, but the omelettes are hearty (and huge), and although I'm a vegetarian, I hear the burgers are pretty decent. Prices are a little high for what you get, but then again, most of these retro diners are doing that these days. I guess you pay for the ambience!

More fun than a Denny's, less polished that a faux-retro hangout, Astro in Silver Lake is about as unpretentious as a sit-down restaurant gets. The food won't win any awards, but it's good, and the atmosphere is inviting and simple. This is the place where smiling, genuinely nice women pour you a cup of non-gourmet coffee and serve your order with professionalism, but they don't make a big deal out of it and they don't pretend you've taken a trip back to an idealized version of the 1950s. If you want eggs, bacon and potatoes at seven in the morning, or if you need a big plate of fries at the end of the night, Astro is your place. They've even got a cool rotating pie display that you can stare at while you pay your check.
