Located at 150 Village Road, at the sign of the hungry dog, you'll find this wood cottage painted in bright colors with a deli-style counter and wine store called Vita's. The food here is wildly delicious as are the women who work behind the counter.
There are a number of hand-made dishes feshly prepared, squared and served up ready for a picnic on one of Lopez Island beaches or scenic outlooks. For instance, Gruyere Mac and Cheese ($4.95 a slice), Tomato Basil Puffed Pastry with Feta Cheese ($4.50) or Curried Chicken Salad ($7.95 lb) pack up very nicely in your basket along with a bottle of red wine from Vita's bottle racks. If you have been more active and seek more substantial items, you can pick up Risotto Stuffed Chicken Breasts ($5.95 ea), Beacon Wrapped Pork Medallions with an apricot glaze on a bed of cranberry wild rice pilaf ($7.95 a serving), or skewers of Chicken or Flank Steak Satay's with exquisitely spiced sauce for $3.95 each. Even though the presentation is informal and served in cardboard cartons, this is gourmet quality food. Really delicious.
Vita's also bakes yummy fresh cookies and bars sitting on cooling racks and people die for the taste of them. Cans of Italian soda and various well-made side dishes can also be had in the shop. If you are on Lopez Island, Vitas is a must stop and rivals any gourmet food of the highest quality in larger cities around the world.
There are a few high counters inside but limited indoor seating space. Outside you'll find a couple of picnic tables and I imagine most food is purchased as take-out either for eaing outdoors or back in the many summer houses and cottages on the island.

The Bay Cafe is the exactly what I think of when I imagine the perfect Washington restaurant - I'd just never found it before! We dined in July, 2006 and it was by far some of the best food we'd ever had, but add to that the unbelievable natural setting of West-facing Lopez Island, and top it off with friendly, helpful, knowledgeable staff and neighborly but professional service, and you have all the things you could want in an island retreat, a special occasion, or just a restful evening of divine, delectable Northwest cusine.

More
Island homes and building projects go together like summer and ice cream. There's always something that needs fixing, and when you're done fixing there's always a new tree fort, tent platform or swimming hole dock to be designed and constructed (these are strictly for the benefit of the kids and grandkids, and not cooked up just because the adults need a project...).
If you live on Lopez, there's really just one place you need to know about for all your fixing and construction project needs: Sunset Builders Supply. They've been around forever, outlasting several other pretenders to the on-island home improvement crown, and there's a reason for it: not only do they have what you need (or can get it on-island for you on short notice), they're also incredibly nice people who treat their customers like friends and neighbors, not target markets. Sure, the prices reflect the fact that everything has to be brought from off-island, but that shouldn't come as a big surprise to anyone who makes a habit of visiting the San Juans.
so next time you're headed south on Center Road, stop in and say hello. You're bound to find something you need for your next project...

More
I don't know how she found him, but my sister worked with Steve for her wedding and the results were incredible. It was a big event (over 300 guests), but somehow he captured the energy and fun of the party in an intensely personal way. My favorite shot - and one that he still uses in his wedding portfolio - is the one of my parents hoisted above the crowd in chairs as we danced the Horah (for those who know me and are scratching their heads, my sister's husband is Jewish).
When my wife and I were married, we didn't shop around at all - we just called Steve. Ours was a very different event - held outdoors instead of in a ballroom, and with a fraction the guest list. Steve adapted his style without a hitch, getting great, candid shots that match my memories of the event perfectly.
I don't know what professionals typically cost, but working with Steve felt like an investment. That said, my wife and I have no regrets about what we paid because of the enjoyment we still get (5 years later) from our wedding album.
If you're willing to work with (and pay for) a pro, I can't recommend Steve Horn highly enough.

Joe at On-Site has been great for us. Not only doing the regular checkup on the cabin, but also all the special projects, winterization, overseeing some light construction. He really cares about the quality of his work and service and is super friendly.

Ever time we go to Lopez we only eat here. This place has the best food out of the few places that are on the island. It is fresh, interesting and the cafe has a nice atmosphere. I highly recommend the salads and the burgers. The quiche was also very good. This place is great for breakfast, lunch and dinner. So next time you are on Lopez go to Love Dog Cafe right at the village next to the grocery store.

More
From early May until mid-October, the Lopez Saturday Market spreads its incredible wares and goodies between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., just across from Vita's Deli (to which you can repair for a lunch treat; Joyce Brinar's food is better than any restaurant on the island -- and there are some good ones, e.g., Love Dog, the Bay Cafe).
There is an extraodinary produce/frozen lamb, pork and beef stand, Horse Drawn Farms -- featured in Seattle restaurants such as the Dahlia Lounge. There are incredible tacos/burritos/quesadillas, redolent of garlic and love. Don't miss Linda Adams' amazing pickles and jams. And you'll chat with half of Lopez's "nonestablishment" as you stroll the market.
There's nothing quite like it elsewhere in Puget Sound.

These cottages are outstanding -- cute, clean, invisible staff, surrounded by meadows and farmland with sheep, rabbits, farm dogs. Close to the village (biking close), and just a pleasant pleasant place. I'd go back anytime...
