Acres of Books is located in a vintage warehouse building on Long Beach Blvd. The doors swing open and you see hundreds of plain wooden bookstacks reaching to the ceiling. On each stack is loaded book shelved upright on sides and then smaller texts are tucked in around them. The store is organized with little paper tags that look like they are decades old. The original owner had to take on the city to keep his store and the new owners have kept the same casual look and tons of texts. Make sure you have hours of time to browse because the store literally has hundreds of titles in the smallest subtopic. The shelving is unique in that you might have a book that came out a few months ago shelved with a rare title on the same topic sitting side by side. The store also has prints and art plates taken from books. The staff is most helpful. Parking is on the street, but there usually is not a problem finding a place. Highest recommendation!

They also offer you either cash or credit for books that are brought in for resale. Be sure to take advantage of the handi wipes by the counter, the dust can be murder on your sinuses.

This store is definitely an adventure. If you are just wanting to browse this is a great store for you. The organization is not the best and it is slightly hard to navigate since it is a very large store. Very musty and yucky smelling. It is also pretty dark and damp. The store is very old and in a pretty bad area. The parking is very limited and the store is very understaffed but it is definitely book heaven.

Acres of Books has been in business in Long Beach since the 1930s and has more than 1 million books in stock. A designated cultural landmark by the city of Long Beach, the bookstore is in its third generation of family ownership. This used bookstore has all kinds of books for readers and collectors. Its full of nooks and crannies with books everythingand every time I go there I find an section Ive never seen before. This place carries the most extensive book selection Ive seen in California, and the employees really know their books and where they are.

You will be greeted by the used bookstore's mascot, Penny, a sweet cat that lounges amongst the books and shelves, and at the ready for a friendly pet behind the ears. The complex itself is like a huge warehouse or barn, filled with seemingly endless tomes, stacked high above your head. Every category imaginable is there, so you'll discover lots of lost treasures. The prices are unbeatable too. It is an old, dusty, marvelous place for book adventurers. Next door lies another bookstore, The Book Baron, but it is smaller and distributes rare or collectible books. If you like books, Acres of Books is worth a visit or two.
PROS: literally acres of used books; Penny, the friendly cat
CONS: too much to peruse in any given visit

My husband influenced me to start reading more books so we decided to dedicate a day to go into a bookstore and stay there for a couple of hours reading books and buying the ones we like. We went to the website and found Acres of Books and it attracted us to go for a visit because it is the largest used bookstore in California. When we arrived there, I was a bit disappointed because the bookstore looked somewhat rundown and the categorization wasn't very clear. But after a couple of hours of manuevering I got the hang of it and actually bought quite a few books. If you're looking for a huge selection of used books, Acres of Books should definitely be one of the first places you should to go.
