Steve Hitman, the proprietor of Stillwater Stonework, is undoubtedly the least professional contractor I've ever had the misfortune of meeting. Minutes after shaking my hand to close a deal on the fabrication of some kitchen and bathroom granite countertops, he began to complain about the agreement we'd just struck. He told me that he shouldn't have accepted the price I'd offered since he had six months to a year's worth of work already lined up. He said that he didn't need the work and that he could quit the business whenever he chose. I told him that I appreciated his willingness to complete the fabrication at such a fair price. I also told him that I was in the real estate investment business and that I planned to purchase several more rental properties. I said that if I was happy with his work, I'd become a repeat customer. "If you're happy with my work?!" he replied indignantly. "If?! Don't you know who I am? I'm the best in the business. No one in the country is doing better work than I'm doing." I told him that I hadn't meant to offend him, but he continued on his puerile tirade for several more minutes. Tired of his amateur behavior, I eventually cut him off. I shook his hand and told him I would bring him a check for half of the agreed amount on the day he had agreed to pick up slabs that I'd already purchased. Steve was supposed to have picked up the granite a week ago today, and I should be installing finished countertops in my house tonight. Not only are my slabs still sitting in a warehouse, but Steve has also not returned one of my half dozen phone calls. In hindsight, I should have broken the deal the moment he told me that he didn't need my business (these events happened in July of '09, in the middle of the Great Recession). I was told that Steve does great work, but he is clearly not the best in the business, as the best in the business returns phone calls and completes work on schedule. If you're looking for a granite contractor, avoid Stillwater Stonework. Hide
