We stop here often on our way to Grandma's. I'm so gld we discovered it, because it's on a par with many expensive museums, and I can't believe it's free. Tax dollars at work for something I enjoy - what a treat! I'm from Indiana but I find it fascinating anyway, as much of it doesn't seem Michigan-specific. Rather, it's a look through the history of much of the US. I love the scenes from the '60s and '70s; I noticed many items I had as a child. Also there are recreated movie theaters, schoolrooms, etc. - it's a very hands-on, fun place for kids.

Michigan's capitol has been completely restored and is absolutely beautiful. It is modeled after the US capitol with Dome and chambers of the legislature on each side. There are also offices of the Governor and former Supreme Court chambers. Tours start in the basement and are free. If you are from Michigan and the legislature is in session you can leave a note with one of the sergent-at-arms (red coats) for your representative or senator and then they will greet you from the floor of the legislature. You can watch the session from the gallery above the chamber. Check out the portiats of former governors in the rotunda. Oh and be sure to stare up into the dome for at least five minutes, you will be amazed by what you see!
