Our families favorite spot for cakes is easily Hoffman's in Kirkland. Every one I've tried (white, chocolate, etc.) has been delicious - moist, dense and with amazing frosting. It will certainly cost you more than Costco, but it's well worth it for a special occasion.
The store itself serves sandwiches for lunch, and has a wide array of pastries to choose from. I haven't sampled the pastries, but the lunch I had there with my mother-in-law and my 18 month old daughter was quite tasty.

My cousin had a terrible experience with Hoffman's for her July wedding a couple of years ago. Two women carried the cake in and literally set it on the cake table without providing any instructions to my aunt or any relatives helping to set up. Since this was a day with 95 degree weather, about 3 hours later when it was time to serve the cake, the cake was melting and falling apart. It was a very lousy way to treat paying customers, especially considering they charged an additional $50.00 for delivery and set-up!
That being said, I have eaten in the shop 3 or 4 times over the years, and they have wonderful European-style pastries and tasty breakfast items as well. If you can purchase something that you can carry out on your own, enjoy. If you are dependant on them to deliver and set up a cake, look elsewhere.

Hoffman's Fine Pastries has gotten some bad press last year when they were apparently going through some staff changes. I believe that everyone need to get three chances before I stop using their service. And even after that I will go back for another try to see if thing are better. I guess I'm just an old softy. We always gotten delicious food and had a good experience at Hoffman's, The last was time we went it was almost closing time and the friendly lady behind the counter gave us a nice discount on what we order.

Hoffman's has excellent pastries, breads, and cakes. Which I believe, are all baked on site. They also serve coffee and espresso drinks.
There are a few small cafe tables to enjoy your treats.
Skip the grocery store, and treat yourself to high quality, fresh baked goods at Hoffman's.
