Vida Placer is one of these little shops that's located on a corner and since it's pretty small - it's very easily overlooked. The name certainly doesn't invite anyone in (at least anyone who doesn't speak Spanish), but once you come in - shield your eyes, because they will get a blast of most brilliant color on very original and beautiful artwork on ceramic, metal and other materials, mostly priced low enough not to send you out the door as soon as you walk in.
This place is quaint, but it's got some gorgeous gift ideas. The owner, Maria, is a pleasure to talk to and knows all there is to know about the art and the people who create it. Most of it is imported from high end artisans of Mexico and it's all carefully handcrafted and painted. And the paint work on some items is truly spectacular.
So, if you're looking to decorate your place on a budget or want to buy a very unique, extremely nice and possibly one of a kind gift - that's the place to go.
They also have a web site at www.vidaplacer.com which shows many items and has online ordering.
Currently (through the end of 2006) she also has a 20% off sale on already unbelievably reasonable (read: some items beg to cost more but don't) prices.
Highly recommend it!

I've been shopping at this GC for years now, and it used to be poorly run and understocked; now it's the best GC in the Seattle area. There have been a couple changes in management-level personnel and I would attribute it to these changes; if you've been there in the past and didn't like it, give them another shot. They carry probably the best assortment of acoustics in the area, a good variety of electrics and basses, and have knowledgable staff and salespeople. They aren't afraid to deal a little to help you out and they'll also leave you alone if you want to try out things by yourself for a while. I personally prefer this method over the "may I help you" x 300 that you usually get at such places. The sales manager stayed half an hour after closing to let one of my friends thoroughly test a fine Martin acoustic (I was there with him) without saying a word; in fact we didn't notice until after we left. BTW he did buy the guitar.

This Kirkland theater keeps a constant stream of children's plays going. Tons of schools take field trips to see weekday morning performances of these plays. I've seen quite a few of them, and I gotta tell you, I have yet to be disappointed. The actors and acctresses do an amazing job. They are charming, amusing and downright fun to watch. Their plays are always humorous and if you bring your kids, you will love them. They do an amazing job of putting together simple costumes and sets, and the music is also charming. They really do a lot with a little bit. If you have young children, I highly recommend this activity. It is well worth the while.

Northwest Pro Hockey recently opened in Kirkland. It has a good selection of player equipment and accessories. There is also the added service of having your equipment washed. This isn't a standard option in most hockey shops but has proved to be very popular. Gloves, shoulder pads, pants and etc can be washed by NW Pro Hockey to bring old equipment back to life.
NW Pro Hockey is run by a couple of local hockey players. They are very knowledgeable regarding the latest hockey equipment along with the northwest hockey scene.

Reasons to Believe is one of those magical shops that make you feel the magic of the Christmas season all year long.
The Santa carvings are just amazing to look at. They have Santa depicted in all different scenes and styles. You can find mantle pieces, ornaments, wall hangings and more. This is the perfect place to find a unique gift for a teacher, special neighbor or family member.
The cost is more than you would find for home decor items at a large store, but the quality of the items and the experience of the store is worth it.

Located in the Kingsgate community of Kirkland, Kingsgate Ice Arena offers a variety of on ice activities such as ice hockey, learn to skate programs and public skating sessions. You can access their learn to skate programs directly or through the Kirkland Parks and Recreation department. The arena is older and definitely not a beauty to look at, but the ice is good and the instructors are easy going and helpful. The rental ice skates could all use new shoe laces-but what can you expect for rental skates. It’s reasonable to do for the family without breaking the bank and good exercise to boot!
