My son just started at miller's Martial Arts Academy in Kirkland...and I can't say enough great things about them! Korbett Miller & his team really know how to keep the kids engaged as well as enriching them as human beings. Every month they have a life theme that they must learn about, and fill out a Q&A form explaining what they've taken away from the lesson. January's lesson was on Empathy & February's lesson is on Impulse Control (which every pre-teen REALLY needs to brush up on in my opinion...) If you decide to join, let them know that you heard about them from SHANNON BJORNSSON on Judy's Book...

Market Street Music is one of the premier Kindermusik studios in the nation. I have had my 5-year-old daughter in their classes since she was 6-months old, and she is well on her way to reading music and can carry a tune with the best of them.
My 2-year-old son has been enrolled from about 9-months old and asks almost every single day for his music class teacher, whom he just adores.
The Kindermusik curriculum itself is fantastic, but it's the teachers at Market Street, particularly Katie & Denise, who make the experience so fantastic for the kids.
You can take a trial class for free, and I would recommend trying them out first. Be warned that it *is* a little pricey, but in my opinion, worth every penny.

The relatively small gallery space here manages to host some consistently interesting shows. I like the wide-ranging focus, which can be photographs, paintings, or three dimensional media of various types. They seem to try hard not to fall into one narrow, comfortable zone of exhibitions, so their displays can surprise, though shock value is not what they are after, either.
The list of classes offered for elementary students through adults is impressive in its breadth, also. The excitement of the classes, and of the students, seems to reach over and inform the gallery, in turn. I always feel a sense of anticipatory excitement, here.
PROS: Free, professional and non-profit gallery

Both my children had wonderful experiences at Countryside Montessori in Kirkland and loved going there. The teachers and directors were caring and both children received a great start to their education and I did not have to worry about their day care. I loved the creativity and attention to detail shown by the staff and the organizational skills they taught. I highly recommend Countryside.

More
The Hypnobirthing Class through Evergreen Hospital is offered by an indpendent instructor who contracts with the hospital. She is not a medical professional but is a certified hypnobirthing instructor. This four-session class included lots of practice, instruction and videos of labors and births where the women used hypnobirthing (a few too many videos, I think). Class materials also include a hypnobirthing book, CD and supplemental materials. These were very worthwhile. Hypnobirthing involves learning deep relaxation and visualization techniques specifically focusing on birthing imagery. If you are already familiar with self-hypnosis or proficient at deep relaxation, the class might be redundant (although it still may be helpful to have the specific imagery and information related to labor and birth). Otherwise, it was well worth it. I learned much more about labor and birth from this class than from the hospital's standard "Labor and Birth" Class.

Friends Playcare is awesome, our 15 month old daughter has been going since Feb and I could not ask for a more loving and nurting enviorment for my child. We went through nannies, an au pair, and 2 daycare centers before we found Friends, I now can relax at work knowing my little one is in great hands. Since attending friends playcare my daughter has learned how to sign, has increased her vocabulary and comes home happy. I highly recommend this daycare to any parent, it is the next best thing to having them stay at home.

More
Best stands for better education for students and teachers. With only 11 teachers and a cap of 175 students it's a lot more personable than some of the much larger schools out there. They hold the kids more accountable for their education which I for one like. With eight sessions instead of the standard 4 quarters, they insure that the kids won't get left behind.
PROS: smaller class sizes, more personalized learning
CONS: not as many electives available

This is a school that was just finished being remodeled and it looks great! Right down to the small details, such as rocking chairs in the library, and window seats in some of the classrooms, it's a gem. However on the downside, the pick-up and drop-off is horrible! You have to park in the Albertson's lot across the street and walk over! Not very kid friendly.

My son went here for a couple of years until we recently moved. They are a great school with super staff and really seem to care about the students. They have a really great wood working class with a very large shop and tons of supplies. The only thing that I didn't care for was the fact that the 9th graders go there also, instead of sending them to the High School so it makes for a pretty large enrollment.
