I saw a commercial on the Maui visitor's channel while I was on my honeymoon, and this store promised to be the end-all-be-all of Hawaiian souvenir shopping. My husband and I had a list, so I talked him into driving up to this place the Monday of our trip, so we could get our souvenirs out of the way.
Let me point out first that in most instances, it doesn't really matter where you buy things in Maui, they are all overpriced. Yes, a WalMart there does sell a lot of the touristy things cheaper, but I found certain stores to have better quality, this being an instance.
Everytime you walk into a Hilo Hattie, you are greeted at the door with an "Aloha" and given a seashell necklace-lei. The store lays out like a Target or other upscale-fashion boutique. There are TONS of Hawaiian shirts, sarongs, leis, scuba equipment, toys, mugs, paintings, postcards, candies (and for the record, Hawaiian chocolate ONLY COMES WITH MACADAMIA nuts... if you have an allergy, you are outta luck), coffees, trivets... you get the idea. Lots of knick-knacks and more.
Combined with several widely-available coupons, you can get a lot here and get freebies too. On our two trips, we got 5 free mugs, 4 necklaces, a photo-card set, and I think a keychain, free. Which helped out in the souvenir-giving department.
The staff is very friendly, and not pushy. Checkout is quick, very secure (they check ID for every transaction), and the selection is good with lots of good quality merchandise. You will pay a bit more here for certain things than say, the local "ABC Store", but it is a bit nicer of an environment, and you get some nice free things, too (if you spend enough).

Just when you think Maui is only sand, surf, sunsets and cocktails (not that there's anything wrong with that), I found the Shops at Wailea. A gorgeous open air mall, with high end stores (think 5th Ave in NY and Rodeo drive in LA), with some great restaurants and the best view ever. A great place for souvenirs, and to give your skin a break from the sun.

Escape to Maui and Panama Jack's actually are two shops that are in one location. Here you can find a good selection of mid-priced tropical and casual clothing for every member of the family. They also have some nice items for the home, and some items that will appeal to you as souvenirs. I've found the staff here to be friendly and helpful.

Honolua Surf Co became my favorite store when I was in Hawaii and it still is now that I am back on the mainland. I love the fact that this is not a huge chain and I have never seen them outside of HI. They offer all sorts of surfer type clothing from tee shirts, sweats, and shorts to shirts and cute tops. They sell both mens and womens clothing. The prices are a little high as are most surfer clothing stores but I love their styles.

Whaler's is basically a nice convenience store. They sell everything from milk to souvenirs to shampoo. My favorite part of their store is the deli. You can get a good sandwich and salad for a decent price. We like to go to Whaler's in the late morning and pick up lunch to take with us on our daily excursion. Whaler's is located in many shopping centers, though we always went to the one in the Shops at Wailea.

This is a great place to send a little bit of hawaii home in the way of the local produce. We were able to send pineapples and a basket of tropical fruit home. It was there the day after we arrived home and was a nice reminder and come down from our vacation.

I walked past Crazy Shirts a few times before I thought to stop because I did not really like anything I saw in their window. They have a lot of tee shirts with sayings on them and while they are good quality I do not like the styles. I did however find a terry cloth hat at this store that I wore every day of my honeymoon and I still wear during the summer. I love that hat.
