Avoid Mieko's like the plague. You will never see the end of your contract. They use National Fitness Financial (google them to see how many people they've robbed and scammed and threatened into paying money not owed to them). The personal trainers work for Pro Fitness in Raleigh, NC, also in on the scamming. They keep billing you while sending threatening letters claiming you still owe money that you don't owe, saying their Advanced Collections people will be after you. They refuse to cancel your contract no matter what you do. Run from them as fast as you can. I have the Atty. General and an attorney involved now, as I want to put them out of business.

We took advantage of a 6-weeks-for-$10 special Mieko's had going on in April and May. It just expired, and we haven't decided whether to sign up for a full membership. Here are the pros (in my opinion): -tons of weight equipment (both free & machines) -tons of cardio equipment (more treadmills than anything else, but still plenty of ellipticals, bikes, & stair-steppers) -a decent amount of classes available -cheap monthly prices after you pay the joining fee. Cons: -the joining fees are almost prohibitively high for our family. When we talked with the membership guy, each person had to pay a $49 "processing fee," and then most levels of membership had an additional "joining fee" along with your monthly fees. -the advertised $18/month package stipulates that you cannot go to the gym between 3-9pm on weekdays. -we went to check it out and ask about prices and ended up being there for over an hour. We didn't feel TOO much pressure from the sales guy, but we still had to answer a lot of annoying questions like: "how much weight do you want to lose?" etc. -they do not have towels, either for cleaning the machines or for use in the locker rooms. You have to clean the machines with paper towels & spray provided at various points in the room.

I really like Mieko's in Lake City. The aerobic classes and elliptical machines are my drug of choice. I find the aerobic instructors as a group to mediocre, but every once in a while they have a really good instructor. As a former instructor, I admit to being hard to please. The ellipticals are rarely broken and I can jump on within 15 minutes during the busiest days. I will admit the staff has changed since they opened. The original employees were very friendly and accommodating. I still get the obligatory greetings, but . . . you can tell it's not authentic. Oh well, I'm there to work out not to get into chats with the staff. My husband likes the weight room. He prefers Mieko's over Bally's on Aurora.

Smelly and non-airconditioned facilities, this place seems to be run by rude & clueless airheads who lately have been promoting it by stapling fliers to local houses! Worse, when it was politely pointed out that defacing private property was likely not a good way to win over new customers, the manager claimed he didn't understand the problem. "Why, *he* gets things stuck to his door all the time - he just throws away what he doesn't want". One wonders what kind of a rundown apartment building he lives in.. When we picked our jaws up off the floor, we asked him not to do this ever again - but he would not agree to it! Wow.. (NOTE: this dump is in Lake City, not Kent as described in the address.
