There's no better place to be on a nice afternoon than the rooftop deck at O'Dowd's on the Country Club Plaza. They also have great live music downstairs on weekends.

We went it because we knew they had an upstairs. There was a lot of smoking but good airflow, so no big deal. There is a little shack upstiars that you can order booz from directly. They had a weak draft selection. The bartenders looked unhappy and the whole place looked pretty dirty. The crowd was averaged, looked like people coming off work. Some old geezers taknig up whole tables which sucked. The place wasn't setup well for people to mingle. The good thing was that they had ledges that you could lean on and put your drink down on and look out over the patio. Good mix of singles and couples, I think it was a good place to meet people.
Pros: Mellow place with a good size patio
Cons: Cold mood, boring, dirty

I'm not really into the bar scene, so I haven't enjoyed O'Dowd's after dark when it really wakes up. I've been there for lunch several times and have always had a good experience. It's not really thought of as a lunch spot, so there's hardly ever a wait (a rare thing for KC eateries). The lunch menu is varied, tasty and inexpensive. A sandwich and fries for under $7 is a steal! I like their Monte Cristo, fries are served with honey for dipping...yum! Also, join their rewards program. It's well-worth the $10 because you get it back immediately and it's easy to get more $10 off coupons with the promos they offer. You can still order a Guinness with lunch...try it!

I wonder if the largest Irish exports are just Irish bars, or at least the pseudo-memorabilia that seems to line the walls of every Irish bar. I say pseudo-memorabilia in this case because O'Dowd's is owned by a bar/restaurant chain and is probably less than 20 years old - and the historical relics laid out everywhere were purchased from a wholesaler, not from the owner's travels through the emerald isles.
With that said, the Murphy's was good, but served incorrectly in a British pint glass, not an Irish stout glass - and the Jameson's, well, it was Jameson's.
I could see myself sitting in the corner of this bar, drinking whisky and stout while listening to the seisun (this time a bodhran player and a guitarist) play old Irish songs. It's nothing special, but sometimes that's what makes places like this so inviting.
