The Velvet Dog is located near the Empire room, and a few other bars on that street. It has a more laid back attitude and look than the dance club, Empire room does. It doesn't get as busy here, which is nice if you want to sit on the patio and talk to your friends, or even sit inside at one of the two different bars in the building. Very cozy and inviting.

If you like sports at all, you MUST visit Chappell's in North Kansas City. It's a bar/grill with great food. Everything I've tried there has been great, and my husband always orders the Chappell Burger (a big, juicy burger served on an english muffin). But, even if you're not too hungry, stop in for a drink and check out the sports memorbilia. The place is packed with stuff--even in the bathrooms! Trophies, penants, balls, autographs...you name it! It can get pretty crowded at the lunch hour, so if you go for a late lunch you can enjoy your lunch and then spend some time browsing. We also love to take out of town guests here when they're visiting (especially our dads!).

If you are in the mood for a great bottle of wine that you probably won't find any where else in the kansas city area, Booze fish Wine Bar near Westport is the place you need to go. Also make sure you have a lot of money on you that night, because this place isn't cheap! Great tasting wine, knowledgable staff, and small, but great little wine bar gets five stars from me.

For me, it's always a real treat to go to Hooper's, and well worth the trip to Brookside. Located only two or three blocks from the MAX stop for 63rd, Hooper's boasts what is easily the best tap selection in the city. About 40 taps stand between the customer and the bartenders, and about five or six of them change on a regular basis. At the moment, it's the only place in the metro that has Bell's Two Hearted Ale on tap, and that's reason enough for me to go.
The layout is that of a neighborhood bar, with everything in woodgrain- walls, floors, ceilings, tables, chairs -everything. The staff is eager to please, but can sometimes take a little while, because the place gets very busy at least five nights a week.
Highly recommended.

Harpo's is just a great all around bar located in Westport. It is often the busiest when the MU Tigers are playing. Harpo's has an upstairs area that is great for a large group and also has a patio out back that is a very fun atmosphere. On a nice day it's a great place to stop in and have a few drinks and some appetizers. Their happy hour prices for both food and drinks are great. The margarita's are just right and the chicken quesadillas are very tasty and filling. You can get just about any appetizer you want. Their sandwiches are usually great too. The service can vary depending on how busy they are. However, if you are watching a game or sitting on the patio you are so relaxed you don't mind. The beer is always cold! Definitely a great place to meet up with some friends and just chill. A fun place!

Don't pass this by if you are the River Market. It isn't just a nightclub, it has a great menu and friendly staff. Be sure to check out the specials as you could be missing the best meal of the week. The pizza is a treat that you must try, a little different from usual and satisfying. If the rib tips are on the menu be sure to try them, you won't be sorry you did. A laid back , cool attitiude with good Jazz on Friday afternoons and a hip club for the night owls.

Canyon Café has a lot going for it. It's located in KC's Plaza, a hot spot for hipsters, families, and tourists. They've got some cool southwestern theming, including torches at the exterior entrance and dimmed lighting inside. The food is fantastic and a pleasant variation on Tex-Mex standards. Unfortunately, service has ranged from "eh" to "and we're paying THEM here?" I don't want to knock all servers, as I'm sure there are some good ones out there. However, we waited forever for a table when the place was completely empty. Something just doesn't add up here... (and it's not like there weren't servers; I had to interrupt one having a gossip session with the bartender in order to get seated). Enjoy at your own risk.

If you are down in the Plaza are, Tomfooleries can be a great place to grab a bite to eat. The restaurant itself is kind of small. This is definitely not the place to take a large group, there are only about two tables that can handle more than four people. They do have happy hour specials with discounts on drinks and appetizers. They also do a reverse happy hour later in the evening. The menu has a good selection and the Peanut Butter chicken salad is my favorite. Ordering off the happy hour menu is a great choice for kids. The burger on there is just a perfect size for them. The margarita's are pretty tasty at this place. Beware that is you go on the weekend, there will likely be a wait and it can seem a little tight when there are tons of people in there. It's a good place to stop in when you already have a reason to be on the Plaza, just don't make a special trip.

Empire Room is not a bad place to hang out on weekend...or even weekday (I went on a Monday once and it was fun). It's a good place if you want to dance and see a mix crowd and get good drinks at not such a hefty fee. It cost $5 to get in the door and then you can party the night away. There's a dance area and a lounge area also. There are couches set right in front of the dance floor and a little stage area. Downstairs are small tables and beds.....currently its closed...not sure why...may be due to renovations. Overall, it's not a bad place to hang out.

I used to live around the corner, and a trip to Fitz's was always exciting. The tap selection is above average, especially for a dive bar. I have never seen it crowded, and it's always easy to get a drink. Within easy walking distance of the Uptown Theater, it's a great place to get a pre- or post-concert drink, in peace and cheapness.
Darts, pool, Golden Tee, and I think pinball are the games available, and the tables are always great for a conversation.
Highly recommended for a quiet drink, to loud music.
