It's a great place to get spices, mixes, nuts, grains at a very reasonable price.

Small country grocery store in the heart of Amish country near Kalona. The store is lit with gas pipes and lamps (a little scarey). The store is run and owned by Amish. Most it...

Great place to do some shopping 10/14/2008

While visiting family near Kalona, we went to Stringtown Grocery. I purchased the pound cake mix, brown gravy mix, potato soup and a few other things. I wish I could have brought home more! (unable to carry on plane). Everything has tasted fabulous! I will be calling family to mail more to me. more

Stringtown Peas! 10/8/2008

I love the roasted peas, not only do I snack on them guilt free, they are the perfect diaper bag food! I feel like my child is getting a nutritional snack that she can feed herself and it's not messy! My in-laws live near Kalona and we have made it a habit to go to Stringtown Grocery anytime we're visiting them. We now live in Germany and my mother-in-law sends us bags of these peas by the pound everytime she ships us something. We also love the corn nuts and cashew brittle. more

Quaint and fun to go to... 10/19/2006

This is a fun place to go. My wife loves to go here and get bulk sunflower seeds, cereal, pastas, etc... I don't want to repeat everything that everyone else has already said, so I'll just say "me too"! ;-) The place just up the street from here is called Central Discount. Or, as we lovingly refer to it, the 'bent and dent'. more

Stringtown grocery 7/5/2006

I know that the Stringtown Grocery is not open on Tuesdays and Sundays. I think it is open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It is a fun trip. If you go on a Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday, just up the road is a "dented can" grocery store that is also fun to go to. It is also run by Amish/Mennonites. more

Stringtown grocery.......a quaint little store with lots of heart 9/7/2005

Ok, I know you are asking how can a grocery store have "lots of heart"? It's simple folks, it's because the people who work in this store are basic and kind and genuine. They don't have the influences of modern day society to cause them to be jaded. They live simple lives and their pure beliefs show in their customer service. This is a grocery store that is run by old world Amish. When I was growing up we used to say their were 2 types of Amish...house Amish and Church Amish. the Church Amish are the stricter of the 2 sects, having no outside influences in the way of TV, electricity and such and the house Amish are a bit more into the modern day world using electricty. If you notice in this store, especially in the restroom, it used to be a store with NO electricity at all (note the lamp on the wall) so this store has obviously been updated a bit to adapt to health standards of refrigeration etc. Now I am not an expert on the Amish religion, and I only report what I learned growing up so if I am off the track I apologise. I respect these people nd their beliefs and I love this store for its simplicity alone. And speaking of respect., they rquest no pictures be taken of themor the store. It opposes their religion to do so, so please remember and respect their wishes and leave the camera in the car. this store is filled with bulk items that they re-package in the back room. from dried fruit to nuts...from pasta to rice you can find most anything here and much more as well. One of my favorites here is the vast array of candy toppings and sugars for cookies and cakes. I have collected all the colors of the rainbow from this place and prices are amazing with a small container about the size of a margarine container costing less than $1.00. At those prices you can really make those holiday cookies shine....and yes, they DO have black and orange sugars...perfect for Halloween! ;-) Other items are holistic balms and creams and natural flavors as well. fresh baked goods are always on hand as well and change daily. If you are ever in the neighborhoood, I invite you to check out this store. It will amaze you in its simple beauty and make you feel as if you have stepped back in time. And on top of all that, you will not pay inflated prices and in this dy and age we can all use a bargain or two! more

Bulk Purchasing 8/9/2005

This grocery store is run by the Old Order Amish. They do speak English. The food is purchased in bulk and then repackaged into more manageable bags. I like to purchase pasta, nuts and spices here. They also have gravy mixes, that orange powdered cheese for macaroni (or popcorn), candy and cereal. They are closed for German holidays. The gaslights give me a headache. more

Bulk food purchasing 8/7/2005

This is a grocery store run by the Old Order Amish. They purchase food in bulk and then divide it into manageable family size packages. You really never know what you will find. Some of the other health & beauty items are very outdated. But the prices on the spices and other bulk items are very cheap. There are noodles, cereals, powered mixes, nuts, dried fruit, Jell-O, candy and homemade bread. It is best to go when lights aren’t needed due to the gas lighting they use, gives me a headache. They are also closed for German Holidays. more
