If it wasn't for the high cost of flying into John Wayne Airport, this airport would be perfect. LAX is much larger and somewhat cheaper but is often crowded and hectic all hours of the day. One thing that isn't great about this airport is that it is only open until 11pm because of the no fly rule in Orange County. For those flying into John Wayne after 11pm (where a flight is delayed), you'll have the option of flying to LAX and shuttled to John Wayne for free. For those flying into John Wayne Airport who don't live in SoCal, renting a car is no problem at John Wayne Airport. You have a choice of Alamo, National, Budget, and more!

This is where I always love to fly out of. Having lived in Orange County for six years, I've always hated the long drive to Los Angeles for a flight through LAX. It's a long trip, horrible lines, and flights that are never on time. When I discovered John Wayne Airport on the other hand, I was pleasantly surprised. It's minutes away from where I currently live, and it's not half as crowded as LAX. On my first visit I got there two hours before my flight, and I was checked, through security, and waiting for my flight a half hour later. I guess it depends on the time of year that you are flying, but this airport is always less crowded than LAX. If you are willing to pay the extra money, definitely pick this airport over LAX. Highly recommmended.
